“Martin hopes to write an ending similar to The Lord of the Rings that he felt gave the story a satisfying depth and resonance. On the other hand, Martin noted the challenge to avoid a situation like the finale of the TV series Lost, which left some fans disappointed by deviating too far from their own theories and desires.”

Lord Of The Rings has an ending in about three acts. It's a long winded affair and the film left the second one out, " The Scouring Of The Shire", in which the Hobbits return home and proceed to cleanse it of the corrupt, authoritarian regime Saruman (who dies earlier in the film) has installed in it. The first act is the happy restoration of the rightful king, the third tells of the departure of the magical heroes to some legendary afterlife-like place beyond the sea. Then Sam Gamgee gets married or something… So what does Martin want to do? He said he wasn't very happy with the first act, which merely implies that the good king will rule well and all will be fine. He also gave "The Scouring of the Shire" as an example when saying his ending would be "bittersweet". I would expect to see the common people come to the fore in the finale and I'd bet we'll get a return of Jorah's S1 line: "The common people pray for rain, health and a summer that never ends. They don't care what game the high lords play."
