I find this very sad news. Not surprised, though.

"....We document the widespread existence of antisocial punishment, that is, the sanctioning of people who behave prosocially. Our evidence comes from public goods experiments that we conducted in 16 comparable participant pools around the world. However, there is a huge cross-societal variation. Some participant pools punished the high contributors as much as they punished the low contributors, whereas in others people only punished low contributors. In some participant pools, antisocial punishment was strong enough to remove the cooperation-enhancing effect of punishment. We also show that weak norms of civic cooperation and the weakness of the rule of law in a country are significant predictors of antisocial punishment. Our results show that punishment opportunities are socially beneficial only if complemented by strong social norms of cooperation."

I believe it, not least for the fact that I'm 100% positive that everyone probably seems an a-hole to someone somewhere, even if they're not maliciously trying.
If the planet were polled about that, everyone would find someone an a-hole, thus we're all a-holes?? lols

Well people hate people there is no doubting that. That's why it's stupid to get offended by racism or sexism because deep down people only care about themselves and hate everyone. even when you do something good for other people it's still just to help your own self-image. Or they'll do something good cuz they expect Karma back, and a lot of people will even think God is watching them and will reward them for good behavior.

I could have given them the same information without a massive loss of time and money.

We needed a study?
To be fair I think its more that people are self centered. Their own needs come first and that doesn't always make for friendliness.

Our tax dollars being spent... wisely? indeed...if they're gonna do this shit, it'd be nice if we all had a say....like, 'do you want your tax-dollars going towards the Asshole Study or the Gay Plumber Museum in Boise, Idaho'?

...you can find cartels of anti-social people who don’t care at all for the common good and prefer to cooperate for keeping a status quo that suits them even if the collective outcome is a mediocre result.
I think that quote pretty much sums it up. The majority tend to be comfortable with their place in the status quo unless that place is a conspicuously unpleasant one; thus, despite some predictable bitchings on the part of the majority regarding the usual thorns that accompany that place (taxes, the forking government, the weather, and other assorted six o'clock news discontents), most of them are quite happy to have things, and their place in the scheme of those things, remain as is. They'll resist and even actively fight any change, even if that change promised a greater good for the greater number--their belief in their risk of losing their place in the hierarchy is simply too great for them to countenance, and I don't think it's just the so-called 'anti-socials' who feel this way--it's the greater number of most entrenched populations who are very willing to endure the mediocrities of their society as long as they can feel somewhat assured they won't drop to a lower rung within it.
In short, most of us are okay with being assholes to some extent, as long as we get to keep our toys and our playground standing in exchange.
