For years, I saw people criticise Emilia Clarke's acting abilities. I am pretty sure a lot of these critics came from people who wouldn't know what makes acting quality whatsoever. Many seem to think only exaggerated emotion levels make for this and rave about Catelyn Stark emoting about her relationship with Jon Snow, but I'll agree Daenerys was not always the most engaging character. She often felt stiff and annoyingly trying to be queen without the commanding presence that would make it successful.
I know she wasn't always well, she recently told of her struggle to recover from brain aneurysms in S2 and that could account for a less than stellar performance but I also surmised the mismatch between the character Daenerys wanted to be and the one Emilia Clarke was portraying was intentional. The actress was acting an actor, Daenerys was trying to act as a queen and making a bad job of it, stiff, pompous, pretentious… that was the character. It was visible in her few intimate scenes with trusted friends, different from her public ones. So bad actress Daenerys wasn't making any other fans than those who had no other choice. Her forced display of royalty wasn't working.
Now that Daenerys has faced the loss of all she fantasised was hers, turned to the dragon her irascible brother once wanted to be, has Emilia Clarke's portraying retrospectively turned fitting? Do her earlier scenes make sense as a failing queen?
I often found Daenerys repulsive. It wasn't bad acting.

Ok, she was easily mocked. I'll grant that one…
