Who knows who's the closest to the real thing since in movies they got to make the characters at least enjoyable to watch and in real life I am sure they tend to be just flat out bad people. so given that info, it's probably going to be difficult to answer the OP's question.

Edward G. Robinson in any crime film he ever appeared in as a gangster.

hi224Well, if you want me to just pick some gangster movie characters I like, ill list the following for now (some of which are popular and others not as much)... -Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (the guy from Game of Thrones) in Shot Caller (2017) -Ray Stevenson in Kill the Irishman (2011) -Colin Farrell in London Boulevard (2010) -Al Pacino in The Godfather trilogy. -Al Pacino in Scarface (1983) (pretty much the gold standard for over-the-top gangster/criminal characters) -James Gandolfini in The Sopranos (1999-2007) (I could list some others in this though if I wanted to, but I won't for now) -Joe Pesci in Casino (1995) -Denzel Washington in American Gangster (2007) etc p.s. I would have listed some in Road to Perdition (2002) but I kind of see it as less gangster than other movies even though it's among my Top 8 movies in general. but I do like Jude Law's character but I see that as more as a 'hitman' type of character. so I just left it off the list for now.
