The Bills never retired a number until 2001. They had the "Wall of Fame" in the stadium (OJ was the first to go up) and numbers were taken out of circulation, OJ's #32, Jack Kemp's #15 etc. To this day, there's only three retired numbers, Kelly's #12, Thurman's #34 and Bruce Smith's #78. No Andre Reed (out of circulation, not retired), no Joe DeLamielleure, no Fred Smerlas, no OJ.
Wow, I did not know that. Weird they didn't retire numbers for so long. In the end, they made the right decision. I believe the Bills weren't going to officially retire numbers. Some, OJ's #32, Jack Kemp's #15, Billy Shaw's #66 were not given out to anyone but none were retired. But Jim Kelly meant so much for the team and for western NY, they had to retire his number. There are still NFL teams that do not retire numbers at all. Dallas and Oakland are two. Did a quick check on iconic Cowboys uni numbers. No one has had Staubach's #12 since he retired, one player had Bob Lilly's #74 and many players wore Dorsett's #33. The Redskins have only retired #33 for Sammy Baugh. It was a news item when Dwayne Haskins asked for and got Joe Theismann's #7.
The 49ers have retired 12 numbers Chicago, 14

Holy crap, other players have worn Dorsett's number? That should be illegal. Same with the Raiders. Many players have worn Bilitnikoff's #25, Marcus Allen's #32, Tim Brown's #81. Bot no one has had Jim Otto's #00

A lot of these are players who left their clubs in the twilight of their careers. Main ones for me is actually the other way around.
Garry Ablett played 15 seasons and kicked over 1000 goals for Geelong, but his first season was at Hawthorn? Blew my mind seeing run aroundcin the Brown and gold. And Nathan Buckley. Played 14 seasons for Collingwood, our coach for the last 8 years, captain of the Magpie team of the century and argued by many to be the grestest Woodsmen of all time, but played his rookie year was at Brisbane (ROTY of course). My god, I just can't handle watching footage of him in any uniform bar the black and white.
