I opened this thread to add Harlan County USA, but I see Spiderwort is a fan.
So here's five others that really impressed me.
The Act of Killing (2012) interviews(!) the executioners who murdered people in the anti-communist purge in Indonesia in 1965-1966. An estimated 1,000,000 people were executed. Ethnic Chinese, union members, intellectuals, anyone opposing the military dictatorship. The executioners still live openly in Indonesian society among the families of the those they killed. Most of the Indonesian film crews were listed as anonymous in the end credits over fear for their safety. My goodness this was chilling to watch as the executioners re-enacted methods of killing people, and philosophize justifications for what they did. The film makers later released The Look of Silence (2014) interviewing family members of the executed, another amazing film.
The Fog of War (2003) Robert McNamara talks about his work in WWII and in the Kennedy Administration, highlighting eleven 'lessons' he's learned over his lifetime. Said another way, Robert McNamara talks about mistakes made during the Vietnam war.
Two rockumentaries...
Ramones End of the Century (2003) - career of the punk band The Ramones.
Gimme Danger- career of Iggy Pop and the Stooges.
