I had a method by which you could blank it; make the title nothing at all.

Threads are called "threads" and may be "nested" because they may branch out in different directions. That's why we would often change the title. For example, there was a thread about the 1970's which branched off into a discussion about the war in Iraq. At that point it only makes sense to change the title.
