True legend worthy of the name. Going to work on - finally - my all time top ten favourite Duke movies. Back tonight to post it. I'll have a try too - but it's gonna be tough - 1 Red River 2 The Searchers 3 The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance 4 Stagecoach 5 She Wore a Yellow Ribbon 6 Fort Apache 7 Sands of Iwo Jima 8 They Were Expendable 9 The Longest Day 10 In Harm's Way I know Rio Bravo is pretty popular but I only "like" it.

"That you John Wayne? Is this...me?" My Top 10 1. The Searchers 2. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance 3. Red River 4. Sands of Iwo Jima 5. Stagecoach 6. The Horse Soldiers 7. 3 Godfathers 8. The Shootist 9. She Wore a Yellow Ribbon 10. The Cowboys I'm with OldAussie on Rio Bravo. It was OK to very good. Walter Brennan's cackling comic relief got stale quickly. Also no True Grit. One of the "Funny Fat Man" films, as I call them. Too many jokes, like McClintock and Big Jake. All of these films were good fun, but Wayne was capable of much better things.
The Bottom Five
1. The Conqueror 2. Jet Pilot 3. The Green Berets 4. Cahill, US Marshal 5. Brannigan
I don't have a problem with the politics of The Green Berets. Lots of people thought we should have been thee (I'm not one) and the enemy was close to how they were portrayed. But, like someone said, Wayne and Cabot were a little too out of shape for the Nam and everyone is way too happy. I ahven't seen to many of the B westerns he made before Stagecoach, heard they were awful.

Did John Wayne ever do a fantasy or sci-fi film?
My introduction to Bogart was his picture in a horror book (The Return of Dr X). And James Cagney shows up in the same for Man of a Thousand Faces. Edward G Robinson did one science fiction film at least and almost POTA. Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, Charlton Heston, Kirk Douglas and others may have ignored the fantasy genres at first until the 70s.
But does Wayne have any such films in this filmography? At least Patrick Wayne got in a couple in 1977.

Sci-Fi just was not really the Duke's line of country, Prime.
