James Stewart
He is the better actor in general and was given the better scripts. As much as I enjoy North by Northwest, it isn't on the same level as Rear Window and Vertigo.

Personally, my favorite leading man in a Hitchcock film is Robert Donat. But of the two in the poll, I prefer Grant by default. Stewart was ineffectual at best in Rope and The Man Who Knew Too Much, and at worst, twisted and weird in Rear Window and Vertigo, and aged less gracefully than Grant. I would much rather have that train ride through the tunnel at the end of North by Northwest with Grant than with Stewart.

I love both of them, but I prefer Stewart.

Close call, but Stewart by a hair. I was raised on Rear Window.

Jimmy.
I don't really care for Grant much in serious roles.

Is there any plausible answer other than Jimmy Stewart? I don't think there is.

They are both great but Stewart was a national treasure. Also Grant is so smooth I knew everything would work out for him. JS is so everyman and somehow vulnerable that I worry about him in Hitchcock movies. Even more so in Westerns.
