Does The Matrix really deserve it's R rating?
Shouldn't Jaws be PG-13?
The Frighteners should be PG-13.

The Frighteners should be PG-13. That rating didn't exist yet. Coincidentally it was Temple of Doom that caused the MPAA to come up with the PG-13 rating.

I personally think that Jaws probably should've been rated R due to the gore and death scenes.

"Harry and Tonto" (1974) got an "R" for one use of the "c" word, otherwise a pretty gentle but sad movie (there was no PG-13 for another 10 years or so).
"The King's Speech" (2010) is rated "R" for the single scene where Logue, the speech therapist, has the King yelling cuss words as an exercise.

There was an otherwise forgettable movie called Stealing Home (1988, rated PG-13) which had a sex scene that was intense enough for an R rating- despite the lack of exposed skin.

Almost all mainstream animated films these days are rated PG when there should be no reason why they can't simply be G. Why even have this rating at all anymore if studios are afraid to use it?

Executive Decision, Broken Arrow, Air Force One, and The Matrix movies should be PG-13
Jaws should be R
Back to the Future and Ghostbusters should be PG-13
there are also plenty of movies where if you remove the F bombs then they would be PG-13

Matrix had too much blood even if no gore. Blood from gunshots and such have to be bloodless overall or a different color.
Reloaded had nudity and Revolutions was going along with the trend.
I assumed the producers wanted an R rating and included a scene or two to ensure it.

I had expected Mission To Mars to get a PG-13 rather than the PG that it received. The Omen(1976) might get a PG-13 today because of an absence of swearing.

Gone with the Wind is rated G, but it should be rated PG-13. Ben-Hur (1959) is rated G, but it should be rated PG-13. Patton is rated PG, but it should be rated PG-13 or R. Days of Heaven is rated PG, but it should be rated PG-13. The Hunchback of Notre Dame should have been rated PG. All Dogs Go to Heaven should have been rated PG. A lot of the James Bond films from the 1970s and 1980s should be rated PG-13. Almost all mainstream animated films these days are rated PG when there should be no reason why they can't simply be G. Why even have this rating at all anymore if studios are afraid to use it? There's so much truth in this. I'm actually relieved Toy Story 4 is rated G.

Shakespeare in Love should have gotten a PG-13.
I know Psycho (1960) has an R-rating attached to it now for whatever reason, but it really shouldn't. There's way more graphic shit on network television today. It should be a mild PG-13 maybe.
Also Airplane! should definitely be an R.

I think JAWS should have been rated R, because of the intensity of the violence. All four death scenes are upsetting. Chrissie's death was the worst, Quint and the estuary victim are tied, then Alex Kintner last. JAWS 2 seems innocent in comparison.
Midnight Cowboy was re-released 25 years later with a PG-13, which is more appropriate than the "X" rating it received in 1969. I guess gay hustling was a big deal back then.
However, the uncut version of "Dressed to Kill" might have warranted an "X" rating.
"Halloween" got an "R" rating and I can see this, but at the same time, there was very little blood, no gore, a brief bit of boobs and I think only one cuss word, which Nancy Loomis gets to utter. "Halloween" also seems innocent in a way. It's a great, suspenseful movie, so well done and does not have a nasty spirit to it. The movie is just pure fun.
John Waters' "Polyester" in no way deserved an "R" rating. It was definitely a "PG" experience. It was so cute and sweet, and John Waters' most endearing film, IMO.
