I think "Female Trouble" is the funniest JW movie, but "Polyester" is irresistible to me.

I've been pretty regular here for about the past six weeks. Before that, it was a stretch. Just too moody for my own good at times. I am sorry I do not remember the poll, Toasted Cheese. Do you remember what JW film got the most votes?

I just found it, Mr. Toasty! Yes, "Serial Mom" seems to be a very popular one. I think it is the crank phone calls that people really like. And, of course, the "cha cha heels" scene in "Female Trouble" everybody remembers. Yee-gawds, that one was stroke of brilliance. I think that "Polyester" really is John Waters' best movie. It had enough of Waters' trademark irreverence, but it also had a soft and sweet and warm center. It is really where everything came together. It's quite an adorable movie. And it was not quite mainstream (and did not merit the "R" rating, it had a little bit of bad language and the sometimes off color humor, oh, well)... With "Hairspray", JW crossed over into mainstream, and he was never able to fully go back to his earlier crude spirit. This is not an unusual thing to happen. The person finds unexpected success and then becomes self-conscious and can't recapture their innocence or something like that. Like how Redd Foxx was hilarious the first three seasons of "Sanford and Son" and then something happened and his humor became too overtly recognizable and then he just lost touch with the original magnetism. The best example of this and one I have not thought about in a long time is Lucille Ball and her first hit "I Love Lucy"... The first season Ball was getting her feet warm, with the one brilliant highlight, "Lucy Does a TV Commercial" (she really is at her best in this episode), the second season she is up and running and it is her best season, she is consistently fresh and hilarious during the second season. She peaked early. But the 3rd season is the show's second best season, I think, and there are many excellent, memorable episodes. The 4th season starts off great, and works its magic all the way up to the middle of the season, with what is maybe my all time favorite ILL episode,"Ethel's Birthday" (I love Ethel Mertz!) and by that time the show was practically iconic and so they sent the lovable foursome off to California, and then everything seemed to go sour overnight, the quality of the writing was no longer there and everything took a back seat to what quickly turned into a cloying over-familiarity. Almost overnight, this wonderful sitcom lost its freshness. And with each proceeding LB sitcom, Miss Ball seemed to regress further and further... She got too cute for her own good and she couldn't go back. I cannot watch her two later shows at all. They are painfully unfunny to me. I did not start this post thinking I was going to end up talking about Lucille Ball... But did you ever watch her shows, Toasted Cheese? What did you think of Lucille Ball's comedic abilities? I would be very interested in hearing your opinions and thoughts, especially about her first show.

It is only rated M here in Australia and that is just a mature recommendation.
I have seen of Lucy Ball on you tube, but when I was a kid, I would watch the show that began with her as an animated stop motion puppet on a stage in a top hat. She had several series and I am not sure which one that is. I would say though her very first t.v. shows would have been the best. Desi Arnaz was very cute. My grandmother loved Lucille Ball.
I like Ethel a lot and I have seen one episode on you tube where she and Lucy are spying on their new neighbour Tallulah Bankhead and they invite her over for dinner. Also one with William Holden in a posh Hollywood restaurant. I have always loved William Holden. He has been one old school actor that hasn't eluded me. You seem to have a better backlog of old films and stars.
