Ha! I love Jean Hill! She was a substitute teacher in Baltimore, Maryland when John Waters discovered her. I can't imagine how much fun as a substitute teacher she would have been! What a hoot!

Love it!
I find Desperate Living the funniest of the 70's Waters oeuvre, if that is what they are....
I didn't like how he wrote Grizelda's demise though in the film, that was just too random. There was a lot of randomness in many of Water's earlier films, as though he ran out of ideas, so just did anything. Polyester had more consistency.

Totally agree with this... "Female Trouble" and "Desperate Living" are his two funniest films, but they both begin to peter out about two thirds into it. I think JW had a lot of youthful energy and sort of his blew his wad before seeing his visions all the way through in those early days. Like how "Pink Flamingos" is just so energetically sporadic, and the highlights are more few and far in between, but when it's funny, it's very funny. God bless The Egg Lady! You can tell how much fun they had making these early films. "Polyester" was his first movie that showed consistency. It is sweet-smelling all the way to the end!
