Admittedly, much of my love for this film comes from pure, undiluted nostalgia. Seeing it as a very young kid at the Drive-In back in 1989 forever cemented my appreciation of it. Watching it now, I still dig the fuck out of it even if some issues become more apparent. I still love the Danny Elfman music, the intentionally ugly look of Gotham City, Jack being Jack, Michael Keaton's brooding neuroses, that awesome Batsuit, and dear old Bob. Also read reviews for the upcoming 4K release. Both it and the remastered Blu-ray look great. This is also said for the following films.

It's one of the better flawed movies of its time. Where style over substance is not a bad thing. Not really a fan of Michael Keaton's Batman/Bruce Wayne in this (I liked him better in Returns) but he's got the best suit of all the more recent movies. Even if Heath Ledger nailed the more primal elemental aspect of Joker's chaotic nature, Jack Nicholson remains outstanding. The timeless neo-noir setting still holds up. As for Kim Basinger as Vicki Vale...well she hasn't looked lovelier.

The timeless neo-noir setting still holds up. When does this movie take place? The article on the left mentions President Truman.

The World of The Future!
So like a raygun gothic 1950 perhaps?

I often debate between this and The Dark Knight as the best Batman film.

He could very well face the death penalty.

What seems crazy to me is Batman Begins is almost as old now as Batman '89 was when BB came out.

Not a perfect film, but good overall.

Still my all time favorite film. Love everything about it. The look, the score, production design and everything else.

Still my favorite Batman film.
They got the batsuit right immediately.
Keaton should have been a mistake but turned in a terrific performance.
Nicholson is just about perfect as Joker.
Great score.

Best superhero movie before 2000. My vote would be for Superman.

It's style over substance, but darn it, it's good style. Danny Elfman's musical score and Anton Furst's production design really elevate the film. Unfortunately, Batman feels like a supporting character in his own film since we don't get to learn too much about him. Having the Joker kill Batman's parents cheapens the character into a revenge-seeking vigilante. The songs by Prince don't mesh too well within the film, but they are enjoyable to listen to on their own merit.

I prefer the Nolan films, but Batman '89 is nonetheless a landmark film. It was instrumental in bringing the dark world of the Batman comics to a mainstream audience.

I always felt this film was lacking something. It's like, it had the potential to be a great film, but it lacked something. I can't put a finger on it. I think "style over substance" really is a good description. And I never liked Keaton as Batman. I felt he was miscast. Nicholson as the Joker though, damn! Pitch-perfect casting. And Basinger at the peak of her popularity and beauty. This is probably the film I associate the most with Basinger in her prime.
I remember this film was HUGE back in 1989. So popular with audiences. And I remember the trend of people wearing a batman t-shirt.
