inception (2010) melancholia (2011) looper (2012) snowpiercer (2013) edge of tomorrow (2014) ex machina (2015*) arrival (2016) blade runner 2049 (2017) annihilation (2018)
*strictly speaking ex machina should be 2014 as it scrapes in with a December screening prior to it's general release in 2015 (in which case 2015 would have to be mad max: fury road.)

I wasn't a huge fan of Blade Runner 2049 because for one thing it left all the interesting plot developments for a sequel. I haven't seen War for the Planet of the Apes or Rise of the Planet of the Apes. I saw Rise and that was pretty good but I found the idea from the old series where the apes took over gradually after being treated as pets for hundreds of years to be a more interesting story whereas the new prequel series aimed for more of an action filled blockbuster approach that didn't have as much appeal for me. I disagree with that. It gave me everything I needed or wanted. The movie is more of a visual and emotional experience and I don't think it even cares much to get into the plot developments that you wanted. The 1982 original does the same thing basically, though it does it better. I don't even think that they are planning on making a sequel. The movie is just finishing Deckard's story, so I don't really know what the point of a third movie would be. I think it is better just to leave everything else up to the imagination.

Maybe my tastes have changed since I saw the original. I'll describe my vaguely remembered qualms with the sequel in white text because I don't know how to do spoiler tags. The sequel had many things that needed answers for me like how a replicant manages to be the head of an organization dedicated to making them without anybody knowing or perhaps caring. And the battles that would happen afterwards seemed more interesting than the ones than we saw in the movie. The first movie had some unanswered questions at the end but they wrapped up the main action where the sequel, from what your impression tells me, cares more about satisfying the questions people had after the first movie but in my mind, led to more developments without explaining them enough.

I didn't say that at all. I said it is finishing his story, but I never said it answers any of the questions left from the first film. It isn't really attempting to answer any of the questions that people had about the first film the way I see it, especially since Ryan Gosling's character is the main focus. It is about his search for answers and Deckard getting to know what happened to his daughter. Both of those storylines are wrapped up in the film imo. It is still left up to the viewer whether Deckard is a replicant or not and that is really the only unanswered question from the first film and only the director's cut implies he is a replicant in the first place. The point of both of the movies is mainly how it would feel to be part of a world that doesn't care about you and both movies explore that question very effectively. It tells you what you need to know imo. As far as I remember (I have only seen it once and that was in 2017) the movie is about what happened to Deckard's daughter and the movie answers that question. Then again I like movies that do exactly what you dislike. Prometheus for example asks a lot of questions and never actually answers any of them. That is what I love about the movie.

I like some movies that are artsy and don't answer questions like for example Angel's Egg. But I'm generally in favor of some sort of plot resolution. Whereas Angel's Egg ends the main part of the plot and thus doesn't need more explanation, Blade Runner 2049 has a lot of new introduced characters and in my opinion, inspires the mind to think of the possibilities which don't get explored. I just thought that those two areas needed more care. We never learn anything about the main bad guy in the movie despite the fact that his human predecessor was a large part of the first movie, and the conflict that he started escalates and reveals that there's even more that's going to happen in the future so it seems natural for me to expect that there was going to be another movie. There was another part that did get resolved but I don't want to talk about that because it didn't affect my view of why they seemed to be setting us up for another movie.
