www.thenational.scot/news/17648695.this-is-what-our-irn-bru-love-affair-tells-us-about-modern-scotland/IT’S the quietly disapproving stare from colleagues, optimising themselves like crazy; or concerned family members, surveying the current state of your mid-50s carcass. “What ... are you drinking?” I am drinking a glass of Irn-Bru, thank you very much. Today, it is in diet form. “Diet! So they’ve added aspartame to the ammoniac acid. Why do you have a death wish?” Questions, questions. But even before I found myself in a loving network of care and aspiration – really, I’m grateful my darlings, I truly am – I always realised that to gulp publicly Irn-Bru was to be part of something bigger. And baser.

I'd like to know what it tastes like. I've read it tastes like bubble gum, cough syrup, oranges, Cactus Cooler which is orange-pineapple, horribly sweet, vile, banana and bubble gum combo, rust - that's enough for now. Not only is Irn-Bru the top-selling soft drink in Scotland but it's the 3rd best-selling in the UK. McDonald's in Scotland got a good slagging when it first opened there for not offering the drink on the menu and Barack Obama was laughed at and scorned in turn when he visited Scotland and was pictured drinking the sugar-free version. So what gives? Later, or tomorrow, I will buy a can of it from the shop and find out what it's really like.

Here we go then. Just bought a 330ml can at the local store (59p or US 75c) Out of curiosity I ask Ranjit at the counter what it tastes like. It doesn't bode well when he pulls a disagreeable face and says "I don't know, I never tried it." I'm already having doubts. But I ask him if he sells a lot of it. This time he nods and says "Yeah, yeah." This bodes better and it probably holds water as my can was the only one left on the refrigerated shelves and Ranjit always keeps his shelves well-stocked, so maybe he had indeed run out of Irn-Bru. Get home. Snap open the ring-pull. First have a little sniff. Yes, if I smell anything familiar at all I smell orange Fanta. The first sip...Wow, not what I had always assumed it to taste like at all. I'd always thought it would be malty and with no fizz. But wait, brah, it tastes good. Clean, crisp, citrusy. Orangey and, yes, a bit of bubble gum coming through too. Very refreshing indeed and very tasty! I'm surprised. This stuff is good. Had it been the name putting me off all these decades? The word play of "Iron" and "Brew" always conjured up some foul-flavoured acquired taste medicine-like potion. But I'm genuinely impressed. Am I surprised? YES. Am I impressed? YES Will I buy it again? BET YOUR ASS I WILL. nutsberryfarm 🏜 Carl LaFong

Well that's two people I know who like it! Already down to the last few sips in the can. It's better than Fanta. It's got fizz but doesn't have so much of that tart bitterness of Fanta. Yeah, I'm a fan.

Yeah, I'm a fan. I wonder if you'd have liked the original formula. There was a bit of an uproar when they changed it recently.

First time I heard about it was when I was on a tour from Edinburgh to Isle of Skye. Our guide/bus driver couldn't keep his praise for the drink. He would mention it every day. I think I was more impressed by his narration of the story of Bonnie Prince Charlie than about constantly hearing praise for Irn Brue. I have always hated Red Bull (which I only tasted once and concluded that it tastes like cough syrup) and my opinion of Irn Brue was not much different. I did love Haggis though!

Once again walked past it last week but I love bubblegum sort of stuff, one of me vape juices is bubblegum flavour. I'm a terror for having a selection of softdrinks in the house like coke, 7up, fanta, Lilt and Lemon etc, definately gonna try this drink now

Ma name is Irn Bru !!!
Adding an E is akin to fucking up malt whisky with a mixer

I recall that in the days of my Glasgow childhood, there was another favourite soft drink called TIZER en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tizerwhich competed for popularity with Irn Bru and Cream Soda and often consumed with an accompanying Double (or single) nougat and ice cream.
