I'm copying this post here in the hope that it will get more bites here than in the 70s folder. Has anyone else seen, and/or does anyone like, Ellery Queen? Only one season ('75-'76), but it's a sheer delight, with a wonderful central performance from David Wayne as Insp. Queen and a likable one from Jim Hutton as Ellery. The guest stars are all great as well, and John Hillerman is an absolute joy as amateur rival detective Simon Brimmer, who's a perfect "expy" for Philo Vance. And, along with Columbo, Jonathan Creek, and Death in Paradise, it's the best-plotted [original, not adaptational] mystery TV program of them all. Anyone interested in posting a list of favorite episodes? I have mine on the other thread, but I can post them here if anyone's interested.

Well, @terrygg, for you and anyone else who may be interested, the whole series is currently available for free online, at the Internet Archive. I don't know for how long that will be, unfortunately.

Yes, I watched it along with other Richard Levinson/William Link productions, all of which are excellent.

Have any favorite episodes or thoughts on the series as a whole, @gottaluvafriend ? I don't recall specific episodes since it was so long ago that I watched the show. I just always enjoyed the Levinson/Link productions. My favorite Anthony Hopkins movie, Guilty Conscience, is a production of theirs.

Just noticed that the only two people who responded to this thread of mine have both left the forum now. Makes me feel a little lonely here...

I love very much this series, you're not alone but I couldn't choose a single episode. Which one is your favorite ?

I completely understand not choosing only one; if forced to choose, I would probably say "The Adventure of the Chinese Dog," if only because it's the first one I ever saw. But here's a list of favorites I wrote for the other thread:

NalkarjI used to watch the show but that was eons ago. I remember liking it as I always liked the two leads. No distinct memory of it other than "good show tonight" type thoughts. Hopefully the program will still be archived come winter. Spring/summer is not "TV time" in the BatCave. Too bad that MsEQ isn't on v02. She enjoyed talking about the show in GREAT detail (sometimes even in the Ellery Queen Threads).

BATouttaheck , you and whiteheat have made me slightly less lonely on this thread ( )--thanks! I remember "Ms. EQ" from the old boards, but we never discussed much of anything: much of my (brief) time there was spent in the "I Need to Know" sub-board, tracking down singers from Sleuth, phones that don't phone, and lousy, unknown low-budget movies (1) that I'd seen for God knows what reason and (2) that it took ages to find. Ah, if I'd only known then it was shutting down... Well, at least I've got the time I spent here with all of you! Anyway, EQ is one of my favorite TV detective shows (with only Columbo beating it on that list)--funny, light, fair-play, and with lots of likable characters, particularly the Queens themselves.

On the subject of Ellery Queen, I'm currently watching Frasier (of all things), and I was reminded that there was a Frasier episode with a very Queenian murder-mystery puzzle--complete with a fairly clever dying clue!
I suppose that goes to show ya that you can find puzzle-plotting in the most unexpected places.

I also watched this show, and what set it apart is that clues were given throughout the episode, and we had to figure out the killer before Ellery. Quite a challenge! I don't think any other crime/detective drama has taken that route. Either we see the murder committed (as in Columbo), or the murderer is revealed by Perry Mason in a great courtroom scene. At least, Ellergy Queen made you think!

I suppose that goes to show ya that you can find puzzle-plotting in the most unexpected places. Then again, I've always thought some writer for that show knew EQ. John Mahoney, who played Martin, would have been perfect for Richard Queen (and the character is a retired police detective, too!); Frasier (and, more than he, Niles) is the eccentric genius in the Queenian mode; and we could arguably fit in Daphne and Roz as curious variations on Sgt. Velie and Nikki Porter...
