Indiana Jones is sort of a jokey version of Harry Steele from SECRET OF THE INCAS but I agree that pretty much everything associated with the character is due to Ford and there is no practical or creative reason to recycle the character (ditto for Kirk, Spock, Dirty Harry etc). James Bond, unlike IJ, started as a novel character. I think he has long run his course and should be retired as well unless they do 1960s-era rehashes but it feels creatively bankrupt to me.
Indiana Jones has always had the problem of being more about the treasure quest and they never could find something as whizbang as the Ark for him to go after.

The difference with James Bond is that James Bond wasn't an original character, he was a book character first and even a TV character before hitting the big screen, so it never really belonged to Connery.
Indy was a movie character first and foremost so he'll always be associated with Ford.

No way Disney bought the rights to just let him die. We are going to get Indy This and Indy That whether we want to or not.
