I bought it on dvd Monday at a used bookstore. I had always been wanting to see this. This seems like one of those movies that seemed to be riding on the coattails of Burton’s Batman and just seems like no one talks about.
Is the movie worth watching and was it just a underrated movie that deserved better?

I thought that it had it's moments but that is just me.
My advice would be to watch it and just judge it for yourself.

Interesting film. The Dark Horse Shadow comics from the late '80s are outstanding.

If you're a fan of pulpy action films in that vein like The Phantom or Rocketeer or Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, I think you'll enjoy this movie. Or if you just want to see Alec Baldwin laugh maniacally behind a red scarf and black fedora while machine gunning down villains, you'd still probably like it. The villain and central threat could had been fleshed out better aside from "take over the world because 'OF COURSE'!!". Penelope Ann Miller looks lovely in thirties outfits. It's also one of those movies where you can play "spot that actor" who randomly shows up in a supporting role like Tim Curry or Peter Boyle and friggin Ian McKellan.

The one thing I don’t get about this movie, is who told Baldwin he should play a superhero?

Several years ago Amazon.com was running a DVD sale and I picked up both The Shadow and The Phantom for, IIRC, $5.99 each.
Both are stylish and entertaining movies.

I enjoy The Shadow well enough but I enjoy these three films to a much higher degree. Not sure what it is that doesn't work for me in that film. I think it's the villain, as you mentioned. The Shadow is a great concept and there are some fun recent comic book runs of the character.

It felt workmanlike, but not without some charm.

Well I watched it. I thought the character was great. Baldwin was just being Baldwin lol. It was enjoyable, but I hope someone takes another shot at this.

I think that was a reasonable price for a movie like this lol
