My previous law firm openly stated that they encouraged a "work/life balance," that they wanted you to take a lunch break and afterwards, take a walk outside, enjoy the fresh air, enjoy time with friends and colleagues, etc. That was all a facade. Over the course of my 12 years there, it worsened and during my last year there in particular, pretty much every time I was out at lunch I'd get texts from the higher-ups - "where are you?! you need to get back here ASAP!" Pretty much every time is was a non-emergency, like a partner had misplaced a document on his mess of a desk. I'm responsible enough so that if we're in the 11th hour of a massive merger, I'm not absconding into the ether for a 3 hour lunch. But during a light workday, there's no reason not to act like a human being for a little while.
15 months ago, I switched firms. Now I'm a partner, I run my own department and not only do I come and go as I please, but I go out of my way to let my underlings enjoy themselves. Unless we're in a closing or are particularly crushed, I encourage them to go out to lunch and enjoy the beautiful weather. On Fridays, I'll even take them out to lunch. What we do is difficult enough, if you have to spend your entire time staring at the same walls without a reprieve, then you'll burn out.
It's also partly a generational thing. Even at my new firm, the old guard are part of that "face time" era. You can't leave the office for lunch, you can't leave before 7 pm. Fuck all that. These old codgers are holding the entire country back, not just the firm. It's not a problem for me as I pay for myself so they leave me alone, but we can work just as easily at home as we can here. They don't understand that and they never will.
