Manhunter is a perfect blend of style and substance. I have never seen another film quite like it. Red Dragon, on its own, is not a bad film at all but compared to Manhunter it does suffer. Every actor in Manhunter is better than their counterparts in Red Dragon. Sometimes overwhelmingly so. Tom Noonan is utterly believable as the Tooth Fairy. Fiennes isn't. Not even close. I prefer Brian Cox's depiction of Leckton to Hopins simply because he isn't so over the top and, ultimately, cartoonish. And Hopkin's Lector became a supernatural force I simply never bought. Most importantly, William Petersen is superb as the tormented Will Graham. By contrast, Norton seemed like he was simply going through the motions. Mann's 80s style I guess you either like or don't. I love it. I think it so unique, so captivating. And the 80s score. Someone else here posted the moment Graham cracked the case in Manhunter. It is such a brilliantly realized moment and a superb performance by Petersen. But this film is filled with great scenes. I highly recommend getting the recent blu ray release by Scream Factory, which restores at least one scene (where Graham actually sympathizes with the killer and then talks about blowing him out of his socks!) that I hadn't seen since the VHS. Manhunter I give a 9.5/10 Red Dragon I give a 7/10.

Definitely Manhunter. Intense and unsettling in equal measure. Tom Noonan projected a very intimidating Dollarhyde. Brian Cox exuded a quiet confidence that did build to an understated arrogance at times. This is possibly William Petersen's finest performance. For me this is by far the best interpretation of the Red Dragon novel.
I found Red Dragon a disappointing take on Thomas Harris's novel. Edward Norton is one of the best actors of his generation. I had high hopes for his performance here. However, he sleepwalks through the movie. Other cast members do not fair much better. Not that it is a bdd movie, it just suffers by comparison with Manhunter.

Even the creator of the Hannibal TV series prefers Manhunter over Red Dragon.
There was an interview of him sharing his disappointment with Red Dragon, but I can't find the damn interview.

Manhunter. Better lead, better villain, better everything. I agree on most counts but always found the lead a bit stilted in Manhunter. Not that ed Norton was much better tbh

I like and dislike them equally. How's that working out for you?

I like everything in Manhunter better except for Lector. Not that Red Dragon is a bad movie, though.

I love "Manhunter", just love it. I thought "Red Dragon" was boring.
