Brazil hosts the 2019 edition of the Copa America. All ten members of the South American confederation take part, along with two guests to make up the numbers, Japan and Qatar. Three groups of four, best two in each group plus the two best third place teams advance to the quarter-finals.
Group A Brazil Bolivia Venezuela Peru
Group B Argentina Colombia Paraguay Qatar
Group C Uruguay Ecuador Japan Chile
Brazil will be missing Neymar, who got injured in the last friendly just before the start of the tournament. Messi will be back with Argentina, and Suarez will be in the squad for Uruguay.
Chile are the two-time defending champions, having won the 2015 edition at home and the special centennial edition one year later in the USA (beating Argentina in the finals both times).

There will be another Copa America next year, and after that it will be held every four years, in the same years as the European Championship and the Olympics. Not sure if it is a good idea to go directly against either of those two events.

is suarez the Mexican guy who bites people? Yes, Suarez is the Mexican guy from Uruguay who has the peculiar and unfortunate habit of biting his opponents.

I like that they've finally decided on a more structured schedule. MLS might be concerned though with 2 major tourneys over an entire summer every 4yrs.

Don't they hold this shite every year? That's insane. It was held on two consecutive years in 2015 and 2016 but that was for a special occasion - the Centennial edition in 2016. Before that it was every four years for some time, and before that every two years, which may seem like a lot but when you take into account that there isn't a qualification process, it probably meant fewer games than the quadrennial European championship.

I'll be tuning in tomorrow (Saturday night as it were) to see what sort of performance Messi turns in v Colombia. If he doesn't win the cup this year, as you say he'll have another chance next year to finally net a winner's medal for Argentina. Failing this year, that's got to be his last chance, surely?
Book :
Brazil 11/10 Argentina 7/2 Uruguay 7 Colombia 9 Chile 12 Peru 25 Paraguay 33 Venezuela, Ecuador 40 Bolivia 66 Japan 80 Qatar 100
(B365)

That's another championship Messi's never won, right? That is right. Messi was six years old the last time Argentina won the Copa America, back in 1993.

Bollox
Just discovered that Copa America is exclusive to Premier Sports which is a subscription channel (£9.99 pm). Most of the matches will start at midnight (UK time), so that'll be a NO.

It's on ESPN+, which one has to pay extra for, and Telemundo, which is in Spanish. I can keep the sound down. The Gold Cup starts today also. (edit) Just noticed it's also on Fox Sports 2 also. Nice.

The Gold Cup starts today also. Hmm, I saw no mention of it in Canadian TV, even though Canada is taking part.

Just saw an ad for that while watching the Netherlands vs Cameroon match. I won't be home (not that I would make a point of watching Canada vs Martinique even if I could).
