Hopkins is a brilliant actor but Bay is an awful director.

He is a genius. He's been putting complete garbage on screen for decades and people keep paying to see it. If that's not genius, I don't know what is.

I mean, when Bay actually tries he can make a good movie. He just never really tries.

... compares him to Spielberg and Scorsese. Full article here: linkThoughts? Good for Hopkins. Clearly Michael Bay does not have the same aesthetic or cinematic sensibilities as Martin Scorsese or even Steven Spielberg, but anybody who doesn't realize that Bay is not only hugely intelligent and massively talented, but is also a brilliant, innovative and even visionary filmmaker is living in cloud cuckoo land. The only Michael Bay films I have enjoyed on a personal level are THE ROCK, 13 HOURS, BAD BOYS 2 and PAIN & GAIN, but I have also seen his TRANSFORMERS flicks, THE ISLAND and ARMAGEDDON. Nobody with a brain and powers of observation can deny the skill with which these films are made. Bay has mad skillz, and vision, and it is no surprise that, for the most part (THE ISLAND flopped, and the excellent, relatively low budget 13 HOURS probably only broke even) his films have been hugely successful across the globe on a financial level. His movies consistently impress and entertain millions and millions of people around the world. If you don't like Bay's films don't watch them - we all have different tastes, but it is both churlish and childish to watch his films and criticise them because you are not the target market and don't like them. Here's a fact which should provide food for thought. There is nobody on this thread (or, for that matter, this board) who can do what Michael Bay can do. I have to presume that many of the negative comments posted on this thread are posted by folk who are jealous of his success and envious of his skills as a filmmaker. Stop being so self involved and try to see the bigger picture boys and girls. Fact is, there are only a handful of people in the world who can do what Michael Bay can do, and in no way, form or fashion is it out of line for Anthony Hopkins (one of the great actors of the modern era) to call him a "genius".
