you saw in a movie or on a tv show?
If so, what happened when you called?

There was a Super Bowl XLIV (2010) ad from How I Met Your Mother (2005 - 2014) where the character of Barney Stinson revealed his phone number to the audience.
It was intentional. If you called it, you received a recording from Neil Patrick Harris. Pretty good marketing strategy.

Just one of those "555" numbers. Didn't work, of course.

I tried calling the supermarket sweep hot line about a year ago. I forgot what happened though.

Movies and TV went the non-existent '555' exchange route in response to all those doofuses who try to call phone numbers they've seen in films and TV shows. Back in the day, before they wised up, you could sometimes call a phone number and actually have it connect. LOL, you wonder how many legal threats it took before that finally changed.

In the DC area, when this was on the charts, the number connected you to the Justice Department.
