It dosn''t really matter because by definition atheism is the absence of whatever that is.

It dosn''t really matter because by definition atheism is the absence of whatever that is. Except you are persisting that everyone should have to same code in order to not offend you. That sounds like one definition of it per that link. That said, I'm with you, atheism is so slight a concept, it cannot be a religion or any ideology really. The reasoning an atheist has to define their existence might be though. Abiogenesis can be a pretty religious experience depending on fervency for example. Heck, worshipping a perfectly sterile and godless brain as the sole solution of our woes (Or more correctly putting faith in since it hasn't accomplished it yet) has got to be up there with Odin and Zeus at least.

Though some atheists don't really care too much about the "big question" altogether and just completely ignore such ideologies. "Abiogenesis can be a pretty religious experience depending on fervency for example." No, not really. Abiogenesis depends on a naturalistic explanation for the origin of life and by proxy rejects a supernatural/religious explanation. It's literally the exact opposite of religion.

It's literally the exact opposite of religion. abiogenesis does not do that. At best, it creates a fiction to fit with nature but religion can do that too. The primary difference is that abiogenesis presumed nothing superior exists beyond humanity’s evolution. Bottom line is where there is no proof whatsoever (& there is no prove for abiogenesis whatsoever) there is belief. It’s just the belief is so slight to not latch onto anything which is why activist atheism can’t help but leech off religion. No one would talk about them otherwise.

That's just a false equivlancy. Everytime there is a so called "mystery of the universe" solved, it's always been a naturalistic explanation. We used to think the sun was a "God", now we know it's a giant ball of gas. We used to think mental disroders were caused by demons, now we know it's caused by issues with brain. We used to think we life on earth was "created" as is, we know about the slow gradual process of evolution. We know naturalistic explanations for so called "creation" actually exist, there's never even been close to a shred of evidence for any theistic/supernatural explanations, therefore it is more reasonable to assume life came out through naturalisitic means. Saying "abiogenesis is pretty much the same as faith" is just intellectual dishonesty.

WTF? I don't 'believe' in abiogenesis. I learn about it and consider it as a possibility for how evolution works... fascinating stuff. Edit. Just read your comments above with Lowtack...It is quite pathetic that you are comparing scientific theories based on facts as being religious in your terms and comparable with religious beliefs which are specifically NOT based on evidence or facts. You need to get your facts straight!

Theism is a religion in the sense that theism as defined here is Christianity. It’s an interesting internet quirk ...as defined here? Do you mean at IMDB2? America? Where, specifically, do you see that is theism defined as Christianity? In his own mind, which to his way of thinking makes it definitive.

Yes, I know what abiogenesis means. Do you? It's an explanation. Nothing more nothing less. Stop pretending incredulity and show that it's something more. And to be clear, I'm not comparing the two except in the context of what is believed. Something that is not proven but generally accepted is a belief. It is completely within your rights to be offended by that notion.

I don't have any belief in the supernatural and no specific 'belief' in the natural world. I tend to accept factual information based on evidence. … and yes there is evidence for abiogenesis. You should read up on it. It is quite compelling compared to the absence of evidence for creationism, which relies purely on 'belief'.

You really don't , that's self apparent.
"It's an explanation. Nothing more nothing less."
Yes, if you ignore the scientific fields of molecular biology, paleontology, astrobiology, oceanography, biophysics, geochemistry and biochemistry.
"And to be clear, I'm not comparing the two except in the context of what is believed."
That's not really what you were saying before, but go ahead and backpeddle.
"Something that is not proven but generally accepted is a belief."
Uh no, that's not really what "belief" means. If a detective is working on a murder mystery and finds a bullet that belongs to the registered hand gun of suspect named John as well as his DNA at the scene, and says "It is my strong belief John did it", that doesn't really fit your defintion, now does it?
"It is completely within your rights to be offended by that notion." Using words correctly and pointing out bad comparisons counts as being "offended"? Oh ok.

I am flattered, however for accuracy maybe you would be better off calling my pearls of wisdom....opinions. I know this is a religion faith and spirituality board, butt to participate here you don't have to have beliefs, just opinions... and you are right, I rarely like the word belief as it tends to rely on unproven statements rather than evidence or fact. You use it when you are not certain of something.
