In some parts of southern China, people believe that eating dog meat helps ward off evil spirits.
In Yulin, a 10-day festival is celebrated every June to mark the summer solstice by eating dogs and lychees. About 10,000 to 15,000 dogs were consumed in the past (one source claims 100,000), although that number was reduced to about 1,000 in 2015. Activists have been trying to get authorities to ban the festival.
