What do you think are some obvious examples of an actor/actress doing this in a role in a movie?
You usually see it in a "paycheck" role for an actor/actress, direct-to-DVD films that feature a famous actor/actress, a franchise film that has an actor/actress come back for money even though they felt done with a franchise, a contractually-obligated role/movie, etc.
Some examples:
Marlon Brando - Christopher Columbus: The Discovery Anthony Hopkins - Bad Company Robert De Niro - Freelancers

Edward Norton - The Italian Job. Was contractually obligated and it shows in his performance.

9 out of 10 movies that Robert DeNiro, Al Pacino, Anthony Hopkins and Nicholas Cage have done in the last 15 or so years have been phoned in. And all of them have won Oscars for a lead role. wtf?
One actor who has NEVER phoned it in... Meryl Streep.

DeNiro, Walken, Morgan Freeman, Anthony Hopkins, and to a lesser extent, Al Pacino, have been phoning it in for a long time.

One actor who has NEVER phoned it in... Meryl Streep. There are a lot more than Meryl Streep. But her problem these days is how she feels the need to go quirky for everything. She's far better than that.

At least Morgan Freeman is honest about doing some films strictly for the money.

Bruce Willis, from what I've heard, has been phoning it in some of his recent films. SOME?! His whole career for the last... at least ten years... has been phoned! He's becoming the new king of straight to DVD.

And there's someone who goes back and forth. Clearly he takes roles that are just for the money, or "easy" for an actor of his caliber. But then he goes and does things like Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy and wins an Oscar, rightfully so, for Darkest Hour. IMO he's brilliant and an over-actor both at the same time, LOL!

She was just plain nuts.

I think former big name actors are 'phoning it in' mainly because they are just taking any random movies for the $ and not because the movie itself might actually end up being good and when a movie itself comes across as pretty generic, it's going to appear they are phoning it in that much more.
but if they gave basically the same performance in a decent/good movie then it won't look as bad. so I think, at least for the most part, it boils down to the quality of the movie they are in. because even if a major name actor is in a so-so at best level of movie they can't save it. but if you get a decent or good director they can easily make a actor shine (or look good enough) and in turn the actor makes the movie shine a bit brighter to.
but like others have said it seems Nicolas Cage/Bruce Willis etc have been 'phoning it in' for quite some time now as they seem to take just about any role for the $ where as years ago they had more of a decent standard in which movies they choose to do.

I think that Gary Oldman is probably one of my top 10 favorite actors, and his over acting can be part of the appeal. But his paycheck roles are really obvious. Red Riding Hood didn't make it as crystal clear as Robocop, but he was also quite clearly uncaring about the proyect

www.independent.ie/entertainment/movies/money-attracted-oldman-to-role-29985238.html"Gary Oldman joked that money was the real reason he signed up to star in RoboCop. The Oscar-nominated British actor said the financial incentive motivated him to join the sci-fi reboot as Doctor Dennett Norton, as he walked up the red carpet for the film's world premiere at BFI Imax South Bank cinema in London alongside Joel Kinnaman, Abbie Cornish and director Jose Padilha. "Money!" the 55-year-old quipped, adding: "I'm at the mercy of what the industry is making and what comes through my door."
Somehow I don't think he was entirely joking.
