Off topic a moment, but the UNIT episode I referenced in my last post ticked me off a great deal when I saw it, particularly since in some earlier episode another Unit wife also fell victim to a con artist. TV Guide had a “Cheers and Jeers” section back then (they still do) and I wrote in to it with the following: "Jeers to THE UNIT for pulling another con job on the soldiers’ wives. Last seaon, Molly was cheated out of $40,000 by a husband-and-wife team of hucksters. (She later got back 15 grand of it.) Now, this week Tiffy hands over a coin worth $100,000 to a two-bit con artist. Give me a break! Better yet, give them a break!" I was extra busy that week and didn’t actually send it in until the next episode had aired, so I figured nothing would come of it. Two weeks later, my wife called to tell me that her sister had read “my article” in the TV GUIDE. It turned out they had printed it as their “Reader’s Jeer of the Week.” They had removed the reference to "last week", and include the names of the actresses portraying the two wives (Abby Brammel as Tiffy; Regina King as Molly). They had also found a picture of the two of them standing near each other looking a little peeved and had captioned it “The Unit’s bitter halves.” It was just wonderful. Thanks for letting me share that; now back to the game.

02. Twilight Zone - A Penny for Your Thoughts - Hector B. Poole (Dick York) tosses a coin in the box to pay for a newspaper, and it lands on its edge. He suddenly is able to read people's thoughts. He finds reading minds has drawbacks, but he does manage to use the ability to his advantage as well as help out others where he works. He gets the girl, and on the way home, he buys an afternoon newspaper, knocking over the coin in the process, and his mind reading powers are gone. But he's gotten all he needed, so he's happy.
03. Hawaii Five-O (1968) - The $100,000 Nickel - A sleight-of-hand artist steals a valuable nickel from a rare coin show. He hides it in a vending machine to avoid capture then has to track it down, while McGarrett is chasing him. Eventually the artist gets the coin, McGarrett gets the artist and uses him to get the bigger crook who hired the artist in the first place.
04. Mission: Impossible - Encore - In order to find out where a hoodlum hid a body in 1937, the team makes him think he is young again and back in 1937. While in a holding cell, one of their helpers tells him it's June 1937, and the hood angrily slams him to the ground. A Kennedy half dollar falls out of his pocket, which would expose the whole scenario as a fraud. Fortunately, the hoodlum doesn't see it and the man is able to stealthily slip it back into his pocket.
05. JAG - Fair Winds and Following Seas - In the series finale, Harm (David James Elliott) and Mac (Catherine Bell) realize that they can't live without each other. In the past, they decided they could not be a couple because they would always be fighting to be best in their military careers. So they come to a solution. Their friend Bud will flip a coin, and whoever loses the tosses will resign from the Navy and go into the private sector where they won't have to compete directly with their spouse. In the last scene, Mac calls the toss and Bud flips the coin. But we never find out who wins the toss - that's left to the viewers' imaginations.
06. TWILIGHT ZONE -Nick of Time- On vacation, Don Carter (William Shatner), and his wife, stop at a diner for lunch. Each booth has a fortune-telling machine where the "Oracle" will answer diner's questions, for a penny. Carter interprets the non-committal sounding answers to apply to him, and is convinced that the responses are accurate. He gets change, and pumps a mound of pennies into the machine with rapid-fire questions.
07. FRIDAY THE 13TH: THE SERIES - Tails I Live, Heads You Die - Ryan and Micki search for a cursed coin that can take a life in order to bring someone else back to life. Micki is cornered by the coin owner and killed. But Ryan, after finding out who the owner was ultimately trying to revive, replaces that body with Micki's corpses and tricks the coin owner into bringing her back to life.
08 DENNIS THE MENACE - "Dennis and the Rare Coin" - Mr. Wilson purchases a rare coin for $250, but Mrs. Wilson, without realizing what it is, lets Dennis take it to use in a wishing well, which was the town fountain.Mr Wilson ends up at the police station when he is caught in the wishing well trying to find the coin.
09. GOMER PYLE USMC - Gomer and the Phone Company - After hanging up a call in a phone booth, $41.75 in quarters comes pouring out the slot. Gomer's buddies tell him he should keep it, but honest Gomer tries to return it to the phone company. They thinks it's a prank and send him away. He then tries to put all the coins back in the slot that night and is arrested by a cop who thinks he was stealing the coins. Sgt. Carter finds the phone company clerk that Gomer tried to return the coins to and he clears Gomer of all charges. Feeling bad about what happens, the phone company exec gives Gomer and all his buddies the gift of one free long distance phone call each.
10. Buffy the Vampire Slayer - The Replacement - Xander is duplicated by Toth, and one Xander is confident and self-assured, the other is doubtful and paranoid. Throughout the episode, the confident Xander keeps playing with a quarter he found that had been flattened on the railroad tracks.
11. THE UNIT – Two Coins – Tiffy buys some old clothes from another vet and finds a good luck coin sewn into one item. It turns out to be worth $100,000. She is torn about how to divide the money but finally decides on doling it all out to others, but keeping none for herself. Sadly, it turns out someone she showed the coin to palmed it and replaced it with a worthless slug. (The other story also involved a coin, but I don’t remember it.)
12. THE WILD WILD WEST - The Night of the Watery Death - While on the train, Artemus tells Jim he owes him a dollar and tosses him a silver dollar - but it sticks to something metallic instead. It's one of Artie's inventions - a magnetized coin that can also be set to explode. Sure enough, before the episode is over, West uses it to attach to a metal 1870's style torpedo and blow it up.
13. GILLIGAN'S ISLAND - Gilligan's Mother-in-Law - Gilligan is planning to marry a native girl to help get the castaways off the island, but a jealous former suitor native challenges him to a spear throwing contest - at each other. The Skipper flips a coin to see who goes first. "Calls heads," he suggests to Gilligan. "Tails," says his little buddy. "Call Heads," insists the Professor. "I want tails!" Gilligan protests. Skipper flips the coin and calls it as "Heads," then whispers to Gilligan. "It was a two-headed coin, you dummy." Fortunately, the native lets Gilligan go first, since he's just a bad shot. Gilligan misses him completely, but happily causes a coconut to topple on his head and thus wins the contest by a knock out.
Am I sure I don't want to go for 13 more? In the words of Artemus Gordon in The Night of the Hangman, "Never before in my entire life have I been more sure of anything!"
UFG.
