the original. Paul Verhoeven never earned my respect he basically used violence as the only story telling in his movies, directors for John Wick and Mad Max (the great George Miller) found a way to use mass violence as what I consider to be a back drop. Anyway I recently picked up the remake of Total Recall in the $3.74 bin at wal-mart to give it another go, and I really enjoy it. Sure Len Wisemen is only so-so but he really made what was a dumb concept (imo) fun. Not only that but if you watch the directors cut of the remake it'll make you think about the plot after its over. Just my two cents. If you like the original I think that's fine but I really feel people would speak out in a positive way for the remake had it not borrowed visuals from recent movies of the time (Minority Report for one).
7/10 is what I give the remake versus 4/10 for Arnold and Verhoeven.

I dislike both but I prefer the original. The original is at least mildly fun camp while the remake is just a bad serious movie.

Anything Arnold was putting out then was gold to his fans and as stated camp and cheesy fun today.
compared to the remake it wins I'm afraid.

I think if there is one gift of acting Arnold has, it is bewilderment. The original "Total Recall" has tons of it. He never knows what the hell is going on and tries to react accordingly. That might sound like a barb, but it actually makes him seem like a real guy, and I love it. This is still one of my favorite movies. Fans not aware of it should read Philip K. Dick's "We Can Remember It for you Wholesale," which is what the story is based on. As corny as the original film got, I feel like Verhoeven handles satire pretty well, and there is quite a bit of it in this story. Not sure the remake (though I did enjoy watching it) really got that part across.
Hard not to compare it to the "Robocop" remake, also originally done by Verhoeven, in the same light. There was certainly some fun to have with this remake (thumbs up Michael Keaton), but the satire of both stories is more interesting than robot cops or turbinium mines on Mars. Neither remake was absolutely terrible, but I felt like they lost their way in capturing the particular element of the story that made it interesting. Sci-Fi and satire have a long relationship...Verhoeven doesn't always hit the mark, but he swings for the fences. Missed the tongue-in-cheek humor in the "Total Recall" and "Robocop" remakes, as I think that's what I liked the originals for in the first place.
Good action in both remakes though. I didn't regret checking them out.

I didn't regret checking them out. Total Recall is actually one of the few movies I dislike Arnold in. Then again, everyone that isn't Michael Ironside is terrible in this movie imo. Sharon Stone's performance makes Elizabeth Berkley in Showgirls look like Meryl Streep. I actully like the remake of RoboCop and the original equally, each for their own reasons. I think the remake captures something existential that the original didn't. The part where Oldman shows his character what he really is is terrifying in a visceral way. Verhoeven is just a bit TOO campy for my taste. |

I am happy for you brokenbow, but I thought the TOTAL RECALL remake sucked donkey balls (big, hairy, smelly ones). Loved the Verhoeven film, though. (a generous) 4 out of 10 is what I rate the mediocre and unnecessary remake. Verhoeven's smashing original gets a 8,5 out of 10 from me. |

Total Recall could have a great re-adaptation if a talented director was behind the camera and it had a good writer. The story can be done in a serious and gritty/surreal manner in the same way Phillip K. Dick's other adaptations have been. I would have loved to see David Cronenberg's version. He actually did storyboards. |

The visual look of the remake is not people's problem with the movie I don't think. That's actually probably the best aspect of the remake imo.

The visuals look fine but their also ripping off tons of other sci-fi movies. Yeah, I know. It actually takes quite a bit of inspiration from both Minority Report and Blade Runner visually. I think the director wanted this adaptation to fit in with that more visceral world. Total Recall (1990) is pretty far removed from every other Philip K. Dick movie adaptation tonally. |

The original is good fun with great ideas, and the storytelling utilises far more than just violence. The violence is ridiculous, gory and silly, done for laughs.
The remake is shit.

Check out the provocative, extraordinary ELLE and the powerful, heartwrenching BLACK BOOK movieman. No campiness here. Also check out his earlier films THE 4TH MAN (1983), TURKISH DELIGHT (1973) and (the more conventional) war drama SOLDIER OF ORANGE (1977). ROBOCOP rocked my world when I saw it on the big screen back in the day (when big screens really were big), and the gloriously trashy, deliciously sleazy and seriously exciting BASIC INSTINCT is a pulp thriller which serves up a wonderful cinematic ride. I adore Cronenburg and have seen all his films, but my absolute favorites are EASTERN PROMISES and A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE - which is the closest he will come to making a western. Jesus is this even a debate. The remake was terrible. I guess I can forgive it, but the poster who said that the Robocop remake was better than the original has serious mental health issues and should get checked out.

TRAILER OF ELLE. www.youtube.com/watch?v=M0s9O_bARgo I hated Black Book and found it unintentionally hilarious/cringe-inducing (I couldn't stand his directing) and Elle didn't work for me writing-wise but I liked his directing and Huppert was great (I don't know what the fuck the writing is going for in the second half but I didn't like it). With Black Book I felt like a was watching an entirely different movie than everybody else because it felt just as cheesy and OTT as the most of his other movies but during serious subject matter. It's actually my least favorite of his films and I found it borderline offensive.
