Why the fuck would Durant leave GS for Brooklyn to team with Kyrie who Boston fans were willing to drive to the airport? It has to be money related. Were the Warriors not willing to max him due to the injury?

Knicks may have been in the right here. This could either be a huge disaster or a smart decision depending on Durant’s recovery from injury.

Butler apparently headed to the Heat, Redick to the Pelicans. The process continues

Knicks signed Julius Randle, who has had two excellent seasons with the Pelicans, to a four-year-deal at about $20m/year. Good pickup, I think. I would much rather see the Knicks build a good, young team around RJ Barrett and fill actual needs than throw max contracts at whoever’s left after all these clowns assemble their superteams. I don’t want to see them throwing $40m a year at some consolation prize like Tobias Harris just so they can say they spent money in the offseason. Knicks may have been in the right here. This could either be a huge disaster or a smart decision depending on Durant’s recovery from injury. Nets are paying KD $40m to rehab for a year, which is a long time for the mercurial Kyrie Irving to start getting salty. Then they’re paying an additional $120m to a KD who is almost certainly not going to be as good the first year he’s back, and might not ever return to form. I don’t expect them to do shit next year without KD, and Kyrie + KD isn’t terrifying either.

Huge free agency news... NBA is going to sign the NHL for $1.9 billion over 11 years.

Trevor Ariza has agreed to a 2-year, $25M deal with the Kings Okay that’s just weird. I’m surprised there isn’t a contender out there willing to pay Ariza more than $12.5m to get a top-tier defender who can also knock down some shots when needed. Ariza is the kind of player that makes a team much more difficult to deal with.

As of now, the only players to ever sign for more than Middleton's 5/$178M deal with the Bucks are Russell Westbrook (5 yrs/$206.8M) and Stephen Curry (5 yrs/$201.2M). Middleton was the 39th overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft, making this the largest contract for a 2nd-round pick in NBA history. These contracts are unbelievable. How pissed are you at your union in you're an NFL player during NFL and MLB free agency? You could be paralyzed on any given play and you'll never see guaranteed contracts, let alone this kind of money. $178M for Middleton, what a joke.

So thoughts on the Celtics in free agency. We signed Kemba which is obviously a win, and losing Kyrie is addition by subtraction. But Horford leaving hurts this team, so you have to say they're worse off than they were a week ago. Our hopes rest on Tatum and Brown having resurgent years and Hayward getting back to what he once was. Kemba is a solid player but diminutive scoring machines have at best gotten the Celtics to early round playoff exits the last few years. The farthest this team has gone in the playoffs recently was 2018 when Kyrie was injured. The Celts desperately need a big man.
As for Horford, he'll hear some boos and by my estimation he deserves them. I'm all for chasing the money but when you go to a division rival with a somewhat comparable chance of winning, that's Benedict Arnold territory. I'm not the type to boo so I'd abstain, but I wouldn't argue with those who do. As far as Kyrie goes, I've never wanted to go to a game with the expressed purpose of booing a motherfucker until now.
I will say there's another upside to the Kemba Walker signing. Whether or not this particular player gets us anywhere, this is the third big time free agent in the last few years to sign in Boston. Considering the Celtics had literally NEVER signed an impact free agent before Horford, they're trending in the right direction. The Celtics finally appear to be a free agency destination.

The NFL, NBA, NHL, and MLB all allocate between 50 & 55 percent of league revenues to player salaries. The NFL roster size is 53 for 32 teams- 1664 players The NBA roster size is 12 for 30 teams- 360 players The NHL roster size is 23 for 31 teams- 713 players The MLB roster size is 25 for 30 teams- 750 players

The fact that football players risk their mental health every down compared to baseball players who could strike out 2 out of 3 ABs and still make the hall of fame is insane to me, but this is where we are. I agree the sports and the leagues are apples and oranges, but the idea that even the best football players won't ever see Middleton money is ridiculous.

Dolan was never going to pay Durant and Durant never wanted to go there. Reminds me of Al Davis' draft philosophy. The reason the Raiders loved taking fast wide receivers so high in the draft every year is because they loved taking fast wide receivers so high in the draft every year. Dolan is going to see the Nets take over the city for the decade & realize that the business of wait til' doesn't fly when it never happens. All it takes is a couple Dolan stories to get around & players will never work for him.
