That's what this article claims: screenrant.com/hollywood-will-smith-offered-superman/I just have a hard time believing it though since Superman Returns went out of its way to connect itself to the Reeve films (the first two anyway) and they even cast an actor pretty much based on the fact that he superficially resembled Reeve.

I'm sure if true, they had no intention of linking Will Smith's version with the Reeves films. They probably thought he was their best bet at making a bankable Superman film at the time.

I heard he was at one point going to play Captain America, but probably not Steve Rogers. Thank goodness neither of these went through. I actually really liked Hancock because it was original.

Yeah I think you are probably correct. It just seems curious to me because the article specifically mentions Superman Returns and Bryan Singer.

Was Will Smith really offered the lead in Superman Returns? I doubt it. Nor was Michael B. Jordan.
You have to understand, these actors are under contract, and according to those contracts the studio heads are obligated to take every actor in their stable seriously for every role they are eligible for. Hence conversations happen with them.
But no studio head is actually going to cast Will Smith or Michael B. Jordan as Superman. At least not yet. This country is still too racist.

It's not impossible, but feels unlikely.
But bear in mind, Muhammad Ali was once considered to play Superman in the 1978 movie.
Sometimes movie publicity departments throw out such rumours, just to see how people reacts.

Don't worry. He made up for it by replacing a white hero by playing James West.
