Weird time periods. I would definitely call 1980s movies “older”

Newer ones. I think it’s just I’ve seen more of those.

Newer ones. I think it’s just I’ve seen more of those. Agreed. Although the older movies are technically better made, I can enjoy the newer ones a ton more.

Probably older, but it's pretty close. I like a lot of stuff from this century.

Eh, well if 'newer' starts at 1980, then I'll opt for those ones.

Weird time periods. I would definitely call 1980s movies “older” OP is probably trying to make the two time periods reasonably similar lengths 30s - 70s (50 years) vs 80s - now (40 years) as opposed to 60 vs 30 years. Plus although it started in the mid-70s, I think it's reasonable to call the 80s the beginning of the "modern blockbuster" age.

1980-Present ; hands down. ...and it's not even close as this makes up 88.2% of my entire favorite movies. the vast majority of my favorite movies are from the 1990's to date (i.e. 79.6% to be exact) with the 2000's being my #1 decade all around (which makes up 30.3% of my favorite movies) as the decades break down like this for me (which is well thought out for me in terms of judging each decade OVERALL)... 1)2000's (four 10/10, four 9/10, twelve solid 8/10, eight 7.5-8/10, eight-teen 7/10. total of 46 movies.) 2)1990's (one 10/10, two 9/10, six solid 8/10, ten 7.5-8/10, sixteen 7/10. total of 35 movies.) 3)2010's (zero 10/10, two 9/10, four solid 8/10, thirteen 7.5-8/10, twenty-one 7/10. total of 40 movies.) 4)1980's (zero 10/10, one 9/10, one solid 8/10, five 7.5-8/10, six 7/10. total of 13 movies.) 5)1960's (two 10/10, one 9/10, one solid 8/10, one 7.5-8/10, four 7/10. total of 9 movies.) 6)1970's (zero 10/10, zero 9/10, zero solid 8/10, three 7.5-8/10, five 7/10. total of 8 movies.) for a total of 151 movies which is nearly everything I scored a 7/10 or higher with there being only one movie pre-1960 that I score a 7/10 or higher which is The Song of Bernadette (1943). because pre-1960 movies tend to drop off a cliff as their overall style etc is just too different from more modern movie standards. like I can't quite say what it is but it's something to do with they lack emotional punch and overall style etc.
hell, I might even take Post-2000 over Pre-2000's overall if I had to choose, but it would be more of a challenge here and not as clear cut. but if you did a Post-1990 vs Pre-1990 than it's very clear cut for me in taking Post-1990 over Pre-1990.
While I have also largely seen more newer than older movies I can tell my opinion would not change even if I had seen more older movies as the all around style etc is just more polished in recent memory as there is simply more movies that stand out lately than in the old days overall.
For me personally I would pretty much classify movies about like this...
pre-1960's = the old days (this is pretty much my cut off point to where overall style etc is just too different from more modern standards. I don't know exactly what it is but old movies just tend to lack something (like more emotional punch/style etc) that more modern movies tend to have.)
1960's = I see this decade as the early days of quality movies.
1970's = I would say this decade is roughly the earliest one could claim for 'modern movies' as looking at more blockbuster types of movies like Jaws (1975) etc.
1980's = I would say by this decade things really start to resemble today's type of style of movies. 1990's to date = clearly modern movies by this point. although maybe one could say the 70's or 80's through the 90's were somewhat similar and by the 2000's started the more recent craze with super hero etc.
I don't really have a precise cut off point but I suspect some of this could be ones perception of things like possibly when they grew up etc. but what I said above is about how I tend to view this stuff as I think even being a little conservative with 'modern movies' I would not go any further back than the 1970's as that seems to be pretty much when the more modern blockbuster types of stuff started. although I would not have a problem with some saying the 1980's is apart of more modern movies (i.e. New Movies) as I feel by then the overall style starts to resemble today's a bit more clearly.
I tend to roughly agree with this especially with the whole 'early days of modern blockbusters' with say Jaws (1975). but by the 1980's things were more standardized by then and start to clearly feel more like modern movies I guess one could say and by the 1990's it was clearly in full swing etc. so even for those who want to classify 'modern movies' (or Newer Movies) as the most recent decade possible I would say no more recent than the 1990's. although I guess if one looked at technology as a baseline then in this case it might be more of a 2000's+ thing for the most part even though one could say a bit into the 1990's sort of like how Jaws does for the 1970's in terms of blockbuster stuff etc.

mslo79There was definitely a seismic shift in the way studios thought about films circa the late 70s/early 80s with the success of "summer blockbusters" like Jaws and Star Wars and the failure of the more "personal/director's vision" type film Heaven's Gate.

12-9, I always thought THIS was the more "classic" film fan site.
99% of my favorite are from the 1930-70s, but also, if I were to put on a random movie from one of those dates, I'm almost certain the older one would be much better. And I was born in the 80s, so its not nostalgia.
