Starring Al Pacino and Gene Hackman.
This is such an underrated gem. It fits in with the era of "Us vs Them and we have a sad ending" types of movies of the time. The everyday type of basic man that gives you hope only to not have it all happen for the guy you are rooting for.
I don't know how this one has slipped under the radar of all those similar movies of the era. Might be time for a rewatch soon.
Your thoughts on those who had seen it?

I saw it when it came out and liked it a great deal. Made by the same director who put Pacino in Panic in Needle Park. Pacino's performance in that film put him in the running for The Godfather.

Solid if uneven film with a great performance by Gene Hackman. The ending certainly hits home.

Terrific movie. One of Gene Hackman's best acting performances, he was so convincing as a big tough guy. And Pacino is gold as always.

Good movie. It was one of my mom's favorites. After that she couldn't watch any show that had Richard Lynch without getting angry all over again.

It's a film that more people should see. Pacino is really good and Hackman deserved a nomination, if you ask me.

Good movie. It was one of my mom's favorites. After that she couldn't watch any show that had Richard Lynch without getting angry all over again. Whenever I saw Lynch, I thought of the scene he had with Pacino in Scarecrow but I nonetheless thought he was a very good bad guy in many films.

I've heard that it's Gene Hackman's favorite of his own films. I really need to see it at some point.

I agree, it is indeed an underrated gem. A gritty and hard-hitting drama that deals with loneliness and alienation and, as you mentioned, fits into that subgenre of anti-establishment films with sad endings. Al Pacino is great as always, but Gene Hackman owns it; this is one of my favorite Hackman performances.
A film historian once called Scarecrow "a kind of 70s version of Steinbeck's Of Mine And Men." I believe that to be an accurate statement.

I actually just saw it for the first time like last week.
It was good, though I felt like it was trying a little too hard to be Midnight Cowboy.

I saw it 20 years ago, and liked it.. Saw it a few times since, and it seems like people are catching up. (Must be an Al Pacino or Gene Hackman fan duty)

Because it was a buddy movie of a couple of losers trying to get somewhere in life with struggles and something sad happens to one of them in the end? I dunno man. I don't see the connection! LOL

Al Pacino and Gene Hackman would not seem to have chemistry as their acting styles and basic temperaments are so different, but they work well together. Pacino is adorable and you want to save him from himself. Hackman's character I liked so much, he seemed so solid. He's never been more attractive and appealing than here. The climactic water fountain scene was pretty upsetting. Best part of this touching buddy movie was Hackman's impromptu strip tease!

I'm sure they are both lost 70's gems.
