Sad news. I enjoyed his performances from Pork Chop Hill to recent years.
The story goes that Dennis Hopper wanted him to play George Hanson in Easy Rider, but backers Bob Rafelson and Bert Schneider insisted on Jack Nicholson.

I haven't seen a whole lot of his work, but I know he had a varied career. From memorable (Larry Sanders Show) to entertaining (Men in Black) to insane (Freddy Got Fingered).

RIP Rip Torn. Such a solid and enjoyable character actor. I actually just watched A Face in the Crowd which was one of his first roles.
I remember seeing No Country For Old Men and thinking that was Torn playing the corrupt businessman, it was actually Stephen Root.

He was also in the first Columbo episode I ever saw.

He was a great villain in the 1982 thriller A Stranger Is Watching. I also enjoyed his performance as Sheriff Wells in the 1984 film Flashpoint, a small but memorable role.
R.I.P.

The first time I remember seeing him was as Nick Nolte's doomed partner in Extreme Prejudice. Wonderful actor, and a solid career. RIP

Rest in peace, Rip Torn. By the way, I just learned today there's a Twitter account called Rip Torn Outlives.
