Hard to know what she was thinking with her initial comments on the topic, but at least she clarified her stance and we can all move on.

She should be able to play any role that she accepts, and she does. No amount of criticism stopped her from playing in Ghost In The Shell, no amount of criticism got that movie pulled from theaters or its ads removed. That doesn't mean that she or anyone is free from criticism. Freedom of Speech goes both ways. The movie wasn't a huge success in America, maybe that had something to do with the "white washing", and that's fine too. Nobody has to like the work you do in a movie or go see that movie.

Plenty of people who don’t fit the exact description of the character in question still can play that part and do it convincingly For example, Gary Sinise isn’t a disabled veteran, yet did a great job in Forest Gump. But now according to The woke crowd, only An actual disabled person should have played the role Can we just stop casting white males all together? Don't like it? Too bad, then don't watch it.

The question I was answering in my conversation with the contemporary artist, David Salle, was about the confrontation between political correctness and art. I personally feel that, in an ideal world, any actor should be able to play anybody and Art, in all forms, should be immune to political correctness
Sounds reasonable
