Very intelligent, somber film about modern alienation in big city. I'm not making it sound very interesting, but it is unusually perceptive. Typical in the early 70s pessimism, it probably has Shirley MacLaine's best performance.

Yes! A brief bit at the party. Did you like it? It's been a long time - I'm a Carol Kane completist - but yes, I liked it, for sure. Been waiting for an official dvd release for some time.

She's cool. You don't hear from too many Carol Kane fans. I thought she was very good as the terrified babysitter in "When a Stranger Calls"...

She appears also in a character drama you may enjoy from the same year, Mike Nichols' 'Carnal Knowledge' (1971). What followed was her character role as a young prostitute in 'The Last Detail' (1973) which came for editor-turned-director Hal Ashby (Kane used to walk her dog with friends Diane Keaton & Anjelica Huston, while living in leading man Jack Nicholson's luxury mansion). Kane played opposite Donald Pleasance in the bleak Nova Scotia drama 'Wedding In White' (1973), a portrait of religious dominance. After this, she worked with Sidney Lumet, Mark Rydell and Woody Allen. By the time 'When A Stranger Calls' came around, she was an experienced film performer. She also had remained friends with Charles Durning which would carry over many years - they made 'Dog Day Afternoon' (1975), 'Harry And Walter Go to New York' (1976), 'When A Stranger Calls' (1979), 'The Muppet Movie' (1979) and 'When A Stranger Calls Back' (1993) together, while crossing paths in television and theatre. I believe she's a good person.
