I thought it was just so-so, until the bike race in the last scene, which was easily the best part of the movie.

I remember when it came out getting some attention. There was also a tv series starring Shaun Cassidy but with some people from the movie.

The serenade scene is one of my favourite movie moments ever.
An utter charmer, one of the great coming-of-age films.

That's one movie I still haven't seen yet. Someday I'll get around to it.

I enjoyed the scene with Paul Dooley talking about the chasm between working-class people and the university.
"I was proud of my work. And the buildings went up. When they were finished the damnedest thing happened. It was like the buildings were too good for us. Nobody told us that. It just felt uncomfortable, that's all."

I had heard about this film for a long time but I didn't get around to seeing it til a few years ago.
Very good film. I didn't expect to enjoy it that much.
Even though I knew the ending I was still quite moved by it.

i just watched it for the first time last night. What a little gem. It has always been one of my favorite movies. Then it became my most favorite movie OF ALL TIME! Why? Because during my last re-watch I noticed for the very first time the bike that Dave is riding. It's a Masi. An Italian bike. Which I just happened to get a few years ago and it is one of the best bikes I have ever had! So seeing that we both have the EXACT same brand of bike just put it over the top for me. BEST. MOVIE. OF. ALL. TIME. FOREVER!!!! Besides seeing my awesome brand of bike in the movie, it has other cool stuff in it to.

On the previous IMDb board for Breaking Away the stunt/bike riding double used to chime in. He then became a tranny and then died.
That was one of the very few times I had ever seen anyone with such a direct connection to a movie be on the boards like that.

The serenade scene is one of my favourite movie moments ever. An utter charmer, one of the great coming-of-age films. Did you notice at how the song that Dave sings is synched up with the record the mother plays back at the house? And that the parents are seducing each other while Dave is wooing his girl? I'm pretty sure that we are supposed to be led to believe that is the same night when Dave's mom conceives.

When they were finished the damnedest thing happened. It was like the buildings were too good for us. Nobody told us that. It just felt uncomfortable, that's all." This is Dooley's best. "I don't care! It's my house! Besides, he doesn't speak English anyway!" He is such a riot in those scenes! Plus he has his poignant moments and plays them perfectly, as you point out.
