It's a horrible idea. 18 games is a mistake anyway, but now you're gonna legislate that teams have to bench their stars? That's the most ridiculous nonsense I could imagine. They can't actually be taking this seriously.

It’s a horrible idea. It now creates a minimum of 704 new NFL starters who are going to want to be paid like starters.

Unless the team is fighting for a playoff spot, this would make the last two weeks even less meaningful. Say you’re the Patriots and you’re 12-2 or 11-3 with two weeks to go. Belichick would bench everyone those last two weeks, giving the Pats in essence a 3 week bye assuming the division aligns as expected. Same if you’re, say, the Dolphins chugging along at 1-13 about to play the 3-11 Jets. It will have all the excitement you could imagine. If they’re adding two more games I’d rather just have an additional bye week.
Edit - or whatever the records would be with two weeks remaining.

I see your point, but you're going to have use a different team as an example. Belichick is constantly (fairly) criticized for leaving his starters in long after the game has been decided. He'd send the starting offense onto the field up by 24 in the 4th quarter in week 20.

I mean I know the odds favor any team getting a bye but isn’t a bye worth its weight in gold to Belichick? Think Brady couldn’t use 3 weeks off at his age?

Absolutely horrid idea. 18 games is a terrible idea anyway, but requiring teams to bench their starters for 2 games is beyond stupid, it would make the games uninteresting and create chaos. Who the fuck came up with this idea? I have a hard time believing anyone could think this is a smart idea.

I agree with you 100%, but good luck convincing Belichick. That guy will have his #1 receiver returning punts in week 17 when they already have the bye wrapped up.

So, If I understand correctly, Every team is going to have to bench every player two games a season. That includes quarterbacks. Who decides which games? Does it make any sense for Cleveland to bench Baker Mayfield for Game 1? Dallas will have to play two games each without Dak Prescott and Zeke Elliott? Buffalo is actually in a playoff hunt and has to bench Josh Allen for a key game? KC and the Chargers are tied going into the last week and the Chiefs have to bench key players while the Chargers opponents field a bunch of scrubs?
One last question, were they smoking PCP or dropping acid?

I suppose “but more games equals more money!” is the most important answer and the answer that the NFL will fall back on in response to every single objection.

But even given that, this approach is the dumbest possible idea I could imagine. If they went to 18 games and added another bye week, then they could work the schedule to make Superbowl Sunday on President's Day weekend, like they've always wanted to and not have to force coaches to ruin games for fans as much But 16 games with the 4 rounds of playoffs is perfect as is. No changes should be made to the schedule. They have other issues to address.

This can't happen. There are too many holes in it. What will it do to fantasy football. A lot of NFL revenue is a direct result of Fantasy players.

I've got no problem with 18 games, but a cap if 16 appearances seems pretty stupid.

It's a dumb suggestion but I think it's just going to be used as a negotiation tactic. Per say the owners will agree to drop this suggestion as long as players agree to drop something like changes to the franchise tag or wanting to legalize weed etc. I personally don't think we're actually going to see this come into existence anytime soon. If we're going to get 18 games eventually you're not going to have them where the teams stars are sitting out 2 of them.

The more ppl are having to face the NFL stupid enough to do it, the more inane it becomes. If star QB is out injured in Sept, but his star OL have reached max by Dec, is the team poorly coached for putting their star QB behind a green OL? I just cannot fathom this becomes real. Besides, if 12-4 teams do tank it for games 17 & 18 sitting everyone, is that not counter to the competitive dna of the NFL? We're not talking taking out star players at the half, we're talking about fielding an XFL squad. Maybe Rog thinks playing pre-season calibre games in December is the new pre-season games in August which will be reduced because he's so fan savvy.
