If he doesn't want to use the money for something major like moving into a bigger or better home or buying a brand-new BMW, in his place I would just keep using the cash for day-to-day expenses and let the "legitimate" income accumulate in my bank account. I would pay cash for anything that could be bought with cash.

As for what I would do if I received a large cash inheritance, that would depend on the amount. I would like to move into a bigger place, so if the amount is large enough for that, I would bite the bullet and declare it, so that I could use it. If it is not enough for that, then I would do as described above.

Although...one time when I did inherit a good sum of cash, I used it to kill off any outstanding student loan(s).
It had to come at the expense of losing my mother, though.

When my mom died I did inherit some money. It was not a fortune. I put it in a bank account and over several years it served as a financial cushion for emergency spending. It is pretty much spent now. Did you space out the deposits and keep them under a certain amount? No I just put them in an account that bears some interest. I should have invested some of it into stocks and try to build upon it, but that would have required constant watching of the market. If you make a bad decision in the stock market losing a lot of money is worse than just gradually spending it all. Either way it wasn't life altering and wasn't even close to even thinking it could have been. Not one of those fantasy stories where your parents have a secret mega fortune squirreled away.

You ever see them shows where someone wins a chance to be in an enclosed wind tunnel with tons of money and they can keep as much as they grab? No one ever wins much in those. I would rather you just write me a check... because of my sparkling personality.  sure who do I make the check out to, and mailing address pls. So you agree I have a sparkling personality!

I'm not talking flying to a private island for 8 days & drinking champagne with dolphins & monkeys here without telling family.

Put it this way... if it's cash laying around in a house, I doubt the gov would know about it. hence, just keep it on the down-low and spend a little here and there in smaller amounts as it will make that persons life a little easier for a little while and if you don't buy anything large I doubt anyone would even notice. so as long as those who know about it are not stupid and stay quiet, you should have no trouble  ; besides I am sure there are plenty of people with this mindset as the gov already screws the average person over enough as it is. no need to give them any more $ than absolutely necessary. p.s. or put it this way... if they got brought to trail over that crap there is no way in hell I would convict them if I was on a jury as long as they are the average person and not some shady person etc. hell, even if I was not particularly a fan of that person I would still likely opt to let them go just because I say screw giving the gov any more $ as they largely waste it anyways. because as that saying goes... when it's someone else money they tend to waste it vs if it's their own money they are spending. so basically a random person spending $14k will be better spent than the gov spending $14k. rachelcarson1953 100% agreed! because as a general rule for me... the less tax on people the better, especially for people who ain't making all that much to begin with. say something like middle class (say the mid-to-lower side of the middle class) and lower as these people should have minimal taxes. one tax I hate is property tax as it's like your basically renting your land from the gov which is BS as once you buy it, you pay taxes on it once, and that's that. it should be yours outright.

That's mighty racist of you, but it needs to be said that yes, you should feel gracious and honored that someone such as myself, who boasts supreme genetics and has stature and breeding to boot and am vastly superior in every way and shape and form, took the time to bother responding to a dorky buffoon like you.
