To name a few - Aliens Die Hard Casino Royale (2006)
These films are great examples of the genre. At least Aliens got a nomination for Best Actress. Also, Raiders of the Lost Ark was nominated for Best Picture but lost out to the prestige picture Chariots of Fire.

The Academy are snobs towards films like these even when you get the rare ones that are well-acted, well-written, well-directed, well-edited, well-executed, etc.

Critical disdain for genre fare like that. If you're not talking for ten minutes, you're not intellectually engaging or something like that.

The Academy only nominates preachy social engineering propaganda. There's plenty to support that. Also plenty to argue against it.

The Academy has a narrow, self-righteous idea of what constitutes art.

The examples faced limited slots against things that were both more traditional and just as well acted.
That said the action movies that are legendary were often elected iirc.

Mad Max Fury Road was definitely a tearjerker Rarely do action movies like that get that much love from them. It's rare that they are that well done. Action movies have to be based on more than just being a good version of their genre tropes. This means that it also has to offer more than a drama does to make up for the lack of it.said drama. It's a tough balancing act.

Because the Academy doesn't see them as important movies, or at least not as important as dramas.
I can't really argue with that because most action movies are just made to entertain, not to make you think.
Die Hard for example is a great action movie, but it's not exactly thought-provoking and doesn't have much emotional depth imo. It is mostly just great entertainment.

I just said that. What is surprising is that Raiders was actually nominated.

Yeah, it's mostly politics in how they nominate stuff, especially lately. where it's mostly about kissing up to minorities simply because they are minorities instead of letting the nominations play out straight up. basically when they force people to give them awards, it lowers the value of those awards vs years ago when a minority won, it was more legitimate since people were not basically told to give them a award. because the vast majority of awards will go to white people since they tend to dominate most movies, so it's natural they will get the most awards because of it. just basic math. like on the flip side of that... in the NBA with say the MVP award for example... things will naturally be reversed since black people tend to dominate the NBA and white people, while they win the MVP award once in a while, are not going to win it much in general. it's just basic math.
p.s. but just straight up... there are not many movies nominated for 'Best Picture' that are of any real worth in the long term. because like I always say a movies true worth is whether audiences want to re-watch a movie from time-to-time as the years pass or not as those that tend to be re-watched a fair amount tend to be remembered and those that don't are pretty much forgettable/forgotten. the vast majority are pretty much forgotten by most.

Don't forget that the Academy is filled with old actors and actresses and directors, some may even live on wellfare, those are the ones they have to supersmile towards, not the critics and not the paying audiences.
The technical awards have special boards though.

jamesbamesyWhile I personally think that the 'Drama' genre is the safest all around bet for finding a quality movie in the long term I do still find some quality action movies a fair amount that are among my favorites in a given year. hell, some years a action oriented movie is my #1 movie straight up as just looking back over the years real quick from 1990 to date, a more action oriented movie was my #1 movie of the year three times... -Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation (2015) -Skyfall (2012) -Running Scared (2006) there might be a little more depending on where one wants to draw the line for 'action movie' but I tried to stick a bit more strictly in that genre for the three I listed above. but if I extended that to a Top 5 of a given year (since it seems they nominate at least 5 movies in a given year for Best Picture at the least)... there would be a fair amount more making the list. Catman 猫的主人Yeah, because they are more concerned with politics than just picking solid movies straight up that they enjoy watching the most. I would like to see what those in the academy truly like watching the most in a given year if they put their politics aside and just pick what they honestly like watching the most. because that's all that really matters in the long term is what movies people tend to enjoy the all around most.

In the last decade, we've had a few good nominations.
Inception, Mad Max: Fury Road, Hacksaw Ridge, The Revenant, and Dunkirk. Of those, the only one that's a "pure" action movie is Fury Road, though. The others are genre films that have a good amount of action mixed in.
M:I - Fallout should have been nominated last year. Black Panther was nominated but not M:I? What a joke.

mslo79Yeah, action is a very subjective genre when it comes to classifying movies. You got the ones mixed with sci-fi and superheroes for instance. Most of my favourite movies of each year aren’t even remotely dramas.
