This weekend it will beat Avatar. I didn't think it would happen, but it looks like it will. Now Disney's reign over the box office is complete.

If it does, here’s a little early celebration.

I'm happy as long as stupid-ass Avatar no longer holds that title.

...and it's not even close to the best blockbuster type of movie either. I have not seen it but given the Marvel movies I did see it's likely it would end up getting a 5/10 (i.e. average (Thumbs Down)) had I seen it. Avatar is pretty average to. but speaking of Avatar, ain't it's $ figures inflated because of the 3D angle? ; hence, it's $ is actually lower if it was converted to standard ticket sales without the inflated 3D costs.

Disney is going to have quite a weekend. It beats Avatar and it also makes a shitload of money from The Lion King.

Because it has the most money. It spends money to make money. Four of the highest grossing films of the year are from Disney.

Congrats to Marvel. I guess that half assed re release was worth it. Still though, Avatar had a great run and I wonder if James Cameron will give Avatar a re release right before Avatar 2 comes out? That would be funny.

Why does it feel like Disney's the only one making money these days? Because that is what they want you to feel. Eisner said the goal was to make Disney the "entertainer for the globe." So no competition, no alternatives, no local art. Why would their news media want to celebrate any achievement by a rival company (I don't mean the other 5 mega-corporations-they are all friends--but much smaller ones).
They can afford to have empty cinemas though since they can subsidize them with other things including government-acquired money.

Caring about grosses over tickets sold is always an oddity.

Caring about grosses over tickets sold is always an oddity. Not really, that's what will determine the future of movies. When avatar made so much, it resulted in all big movies coming out in 3d. for awhile that was the movies selling point.
