Australia lead by 317 with 4 wickets in hand. Smith and Wade have batted them almost into a position where they can’t lose. Australia will push on - Paine and Langer are a bit more conservative was than most. But a draw from 8/122 is a good effort. Draw? Aussies would very likely win this one imo.

Over the last ten years on this pitch, it’s been easiest to score runs on the fourth day. The fifth day is far and away the hardest day to score runs on. Sky Sports did an interesting graphic. HOHOHO!
GRAEME SMITH says hello!
That was more than 10 years ago so not included in figures.

Ball got covered in beer so they’re changing it. I wonder if that’s because of Moeen Ali!

I am baffled at Australia's reluctance to declare. 320 would have been enough. Okay 350 should have been ceiling. That too when there's rain predicted for tomorrow.

Me too, doesn't make sense unless they think Roy is going to club a white ball innings! The rain forecast for this afternoon is now forecast for overnight. I'll laugh my tackle off if Oz run out of time tomorrow, I hate over conservative declaration batting.

Zzzzzz is right. If England's batsmen do what I expect them tomorrow then this whole series might be Zzzzzz for everyone who isn't Australian.

Lyon is warming up. Seems he will open the bowling along with Siddle.

Two not so good overs by Siddle. His line was way off. But Lyon is looking dangerous.

England's hopes of competing in the series rest on their bats today. If they fall in a heap here, they're done for the summer.
Going forward: Moeen has to go and Bairstow must surely be considered for the chop too. Like Ali's bowling, his keeping is sub standard and can only be justified by scoring runs, which Bairstow hasn't done consistently for a long time.
They also need a better captain, but not much can be done there. With Smith, I'd keep it simple. Bowl around the wicket stump to stump to bring bowled and lbw into play. Eventually he'll miss and you'll hit. If that means he gets 50-75 every time I'd take that over 140.

To answer the question "will the late declaration effect Aussie chances," I disagree with the premise. It wasn't late. The putvh is getting easier to bat on (apart from some spinners) so you don't want to set England say 320 in 7 hours. What if they put on 50 that night without loss and you've only got 270 left to defend on the last day? I know rain is predicted, but weather is far from an exact science. If you declare sooner and the rain doesn't come, and the pitch stays placid, you're left holding your proverbial dick in your hand.
Better to bat them out of the game and leave them only thinking surviving a long slog on the final day. Teams in that position often lack.purpose in their batting and are more susceptible to collapse.
