They've taken out one of the world's best No.4 bats and replaced with a mediocre No.3. Play people where they play best. I really am expecting an Aussie mauling now.

Is test cricket in its present form out of date?
I remember in my younger pre-limited over cricket days, wondering who had the time to watch a 4/5 day County/Test match. Probably some old codgers, getting away from the missus, having a few G&Ts and a decent kip.
We have recently been treated to a festival of highly entertaining 50 overs (white-ball) matches and last night, an exciting exhibition of T20 Blast cricket. (Surrey v Kent). Is the possibility of test matches being played over 2 days with 2 innings each of 50/60 overs, blasphemy to the "members" and the MCC/ICC?

I did enjoy the World Cup, but still prefer a proper test match. It'll never disappear, please God!

ARCHER left out of first test. no CURRAN either. Archer is still niggled by injury, they couldn't risk him with Anderson back from injury as well. No bad thing having Woakes bowling on his own manor.

I don't like Root at 3 at all. You should only be batting at 3 if you're a test No.3. Root is much better coming in at a time when the ball isn't moving and he can throw his bat at the ball. Stokes is an interesting one. He could indeed be the key. Warner and Smith should score plenty, but I think for both teams it's going to be what they can get out of guys like Bairstow, Bancroft etc. I don't think you can win a 5 test series off one or two men's bats. Well I got my wish, I think Joe was compelled to move to 3 after reading what I said - namely he should show bollocks and bat 3 and lead from the front - either you or I are going to be left with egg on their face, but he gets my admiration for FINALLY stepping up. We do agree on Denly though, piss poor selection and I truly hope he proves me wrong. If Root falls cheaply England are most likely going to find themselves 5 down for not many - then we will see if pimpin is right that England's lower order is over rated...

Here's the thing: Root averages about 10 less at 3 than at 4. Denly, if he exceeds both our expectations might average 20 or so.less at 4 than Root. So you're already spotting Australia 30 runs before a ball is bowled. And if Root's batting out of position due to public pressure than that's a sign of weakness, not strength.

Well since you love stats and numberations so much you seem to have missed an obvious one that negates your math probability. If as we all expect, England quickly lose one of their openers, Root is practically going to be in as an opener, where, as Carl has kindly provided the page for, Root averages 41! A gamble? Of course it is, but England would rather have their best batsman in early to hopefully repel the collapses that so blights the test team. Big toss as usual in the morning, any sort of overhead conditions with the new Dukes ball spells danger for whoever bats - if the bowling side bowls well of course! May the best team win and lets hope nobody takes an angle grinder on to the pitch to scuff the ball in any way

I think the existing record reveals that England are worse off with Root at no.3. Though England fan will hope that their taking chance with Root at no.3 works. I personally think Root may not do well at 3.
But I believe Buttler and Stokes are going to step up in this series and might prove England's biggest weapons.

Where is Bob? Anyone know, is he ok? Bob is in Hawaii on Holidays. Didn’t I post it on here ? Anyways, Today is the first morning I’ve had in over a week with both decent wifi and a lull in the schedule. England’s top order looks shit. If Ali is your best spinner you’ve got problems. Meanwhile Australia are leaving out an opener averaging 80 and the leading wicket taker from the WC might not make the XI

Ed Cowan agrees with bob on Starc but not Harris. The Burns one us ridiculous. A. He's the incumbent opener B. He made 180 in the last test Australia played. C. He, Patterson and Khawaja are the only Australian batsmen to score a hundred in our kast 10 test matches. D. He'd been banging the door down for 12 months before getting picked. And E. He is somehow now behind not only Cam Bancroft, but Marcus Harris, who failed to secure his place last summer by not doing what Burns did: grasping his opportunity with both hands and scoring a big hundred.
Apparently looking good and getting out is more important than scoring hundreds. Most national teams would love to have Burns as an opener, including England.

Bancroft Burns Khawaja Smith Warner Head/Patterson Paine Cummins Lyon Pattinson Hazlewood/Starc Seems easy and obvious to me

A: State the bleeding obvious why don't you B: Tell that to our selectors will you... Well he does tend to sneak some wickets, but conversely it means England are carrying a walking wicket.

Weather Watch
If forecast is right we are set fair for a dry day, bit of light cloud and a breeze throughout, going to get warmer as the day progresses.
If you believe in such forecast things that is...
