There was a movie star about which I have said for decades got very far despite having only average "looks" and having below average acting talent. But, being married to a studio head didn't hurt. Watching Norma Shearer act can at times be painful for me.
Does anybody else have this problem with an Academy Award winning star?

Marsha Mason has never won an Oscar, but she's been nominated four times. I just find her a bit of a limp rag on-camera, not noticeably good-looking nor noticeably thespically gifted; I've always felt that had she been married to someone other than mega-playwright Neil Simon, her acting career would never have gotten to the levels it did.

Mason was never one of my favorites. I attempted to look for something due to the acclaim she got, but couldn't really see it. I think she was more suited to the smaller screen and I haven't seen Cinderella Liberty, but the best performance I saw her give was as a guest star in a 80's t.v series called Hothouse which was short lived. She played an actress with some psych issues and went to the hothouse for counselling treatment.
Yes, if it wasn't for Simon, I'd say she wouldn't have really been much on the radar.

I never much cared for her, either. She's not unlikeable necessarily, she's just not charismatic. Part of it could be due to Neil Simon's obnoxious laughing-through-tears schtick, which gets old really fast.

I have only seen "The Women", and I didn't like Shearer in that movie, performance or character. She was just too grandly virtuous.

It is an excellent, nostalgic and bittersweet ensemble piece, with interesting and likeable characters. Very much a dramady, it is one of my favorite Simon films and doesn't contain his usual forced and superficial humorous quips to make something appear funnier than what it really is. Parts I enjoy so much, I replay them while watching it. In many of the films I have seen written by him, I am waiting for the canned laughter to remind me I was supposed to laugh.
