So if this thread sucks than blame aj for making me do it 😂
But if you went to a religious school what were the positive and negative experiences you had? Sometimes I wonder if religious school are bad for society or if it's bad for the child growing up.. I would say its okay because i turned out okay in the end
Bad:
I alway hated how I felt restricted and never felt free to express myself.
Religion was taught as a course and you were actually graded on it as if it were another subject. I always thought that was weird. My neighbor was Baptist and said they only had this thing called “bible time” in school but it wasn’t considered a course like it was for me. Like if I were to fail that class I couldn’t pass the grade? Sounds kind of ridiculous. Maybe it was just a catholic thing.
We went on a trip every year to this huge church and you were literally there the whole day. So that was like 8 hours of doing absolutely nothing and I remember being so miserable and I would pretend to be sick the ever single year after that. My mom totally understood and let me but seriously who thought that would be a good idea??
Religion was enforced on us and if we refused that was considered a behavioral issue. They pretty much told you the way to think and it was mandatory to do these religious obligations that had nothing to do with learning. They also tried to make you feel bad and guilty about things because of your sins or whatever..
I hated how we had to go to confessions and every time we went to confession as a school I would go up to a priest and not say anything because i was always so nervous.. i feel like a kid shouldnt be that nervous..
We got detentions for no reason like forgetting to bring a bible lol good times.. one time I even got a detention for not having my folder.
I never took sex ed which I thought would be beneficial lol .. also the saying that catholic school girls are slutty is actually pretty accurate. We would all hem are skirts to make them shorter.. the restrictions kind of make you go crazy
.
We also had some crazy teachers but I guess they’re everywhere but ive had so many in catholic school.. like in 7th grade we had this teacher and a kid was wearing a cap or something then she screamed “NO HATS IN CLASS!!” and literally took his hat off his head and threw it on the floor and looked crazed… and then I had a lunch box on the floor and she was like “NO LUNCH BOXES ON THE FLOOR!!” and literally kicked my lunchbox across the room and this kid ran off to get it for me.. she was nuts.. lol we actually purposely gave her life hell and we would run around the classroom when we were supposed to be sitting and would be talking over her while she was teaching and even throw stuff and make animal sounds like it was a zoo. We would even take pictures of her when she started screaming and blast music on randomly during tests.... That was also the same year girls thought it was funny to randomly lift up each other’s skirts in the air.. like a girl would just lift up your skirt from behind you and start laughing .. we even pulled down these guys pants and his boxers had dollar bills on them and you can tell how embarrassed he was but tried to act cool so we kept laughing so hard we couldn’t stop..and we eventually made the teacher quit her job and now I feel bad we did that..
but it was what made school entertaining -_- the teacher even told us when she saw us lift up our skirts that we should go to the priest and "entertain him too" and we got so weirded out by that comment.. and then the whole classroom turned into this crazy laughter that literally lasted 10-15 minutes when she started swinging a rosary in her hands just to show us that's not what we were supposed to do to them. when one person started laughing everyone else did...like when she told the boys to get out of their seats to line up and a girl got out of her seat to line up and the teacher started screaming "YOU'RE NOT A BOY SIT DOWN!!" we literally pointed at her and laughed at her for 10 minutes straight and her face turned bright red lol we were so mean.. so we really didnt learn anything that year and like over 4 kids got expelled 😂 a lot of parents hated catholic school because our class that year.. 😂 when the teacher quit her job the vice principal taught us the rest of the year until they could find a new teacher and lets just say he was very intimidating and strict and everyone was dead silent everytime he walked in.. we like went from one extreme to the other real quick. 😂
Good:
I thought the uniforms were cute and I felt so cool in 6th grade when girls started wearing skirts instead of dresses 😂
And also the crazy memories like i shared above when looking back at it all 😂

Bad: Insane nuns hitting me with rulers. (Sometimes they were metal rulers. Sometimes they were yard sticks).
Good: The realization that religion...(all of them, not any specific one)...is bat $h!t crazy.

Bad: I attended two Christian (Protestant) schools, grades K-6. The first one used corporal punishment for misbehavior or poor grades. There's nothing like beating a 6 year-old child with a wooden paddle for receiving less than an 88% on a weekly test. My mother later told me I kept walking around the house spouting Bible verses like a little robot. My parents withdrew me from that school after 2nd grade. Good: They had air-conditioned classrooms at a time when other schools did not.

I attended a Catholic school for Grs. 7 & 8.
Bad:
The only 2 teachers I ever had a strong dislike for, I had at this particular school (fortunately, they were both substitute teachers; not our regular ones).
Good:
They had a lot of activities for the kids. In Gr. 7, I even remember that we had double PA Days.

She even said stuff like "If I could beat you with this ruler I would!" and only hit our desks with them instead.

My biggest bad experience stems from me transferring to one rather than the actual school itself. I went from one school in 5th grade to a Catholic school in 6th. The kids in my new class had been together since kindergarten so I came in not knowing a single person and I had a hard time fitting in with the dress code changes and new teachers. It was a bit too much of a culture shock and my mother had to have a sit down with teachers to figure out what was going on. After that tho things got better.
I will say religion class is where I first grew to doubt. I asked one teacher a few questions regarding some things and the answers I got were unsatisfactory to an 11 yr old. I remember that moment being the first time I thought 'is this just a bunch of bull?' And I never really turned back from that thought process. So I guess that can be both a good and bad thing.

Our school went from K-8 and I was there through the whole thing from K-8. And alot of kids I knew went from K-8 as well so we all knew each ther and we all had our own friends. But I remember when new kids would come in and i could imagine how awkward they felt at first... but they all ended up finding friends so that was good. 6-8 grade was where most of the new kids came in. There was only one new kid in 7th grade i remember that had to experience that crazy teacher like I mentioned already.. he was really quiet at first and didnt know what to do but then became a trouble maker like the rest of us 😂

My dad went to Catholic school when he was young and he said that he was beat all the time by the nuns. he told me a story of one time he and his friends were in line just waving their arms to be funny.. and then this nun walks by with a whip and whips their arms one by one and my dad told me his reaction was like "AHHH! my arms"😂 and didnt want to cry until he made it home when no one saw him.. and if he ever told his parents they would beat him too so he never really talked about it.. sounds brutal

In 1988 Corporal Punishment was banned in Uk state schools, the ability to beat children with slippers and wooden canes was removed. The bad news was private schools(including mine) received an exemption which meant they continued to beat children(including me) up until 1998 when the European convention on children's rights forced them to stop. I wasn't a particularly bad child so my beatings were rare but I never forgot them and they were part of the reason I soured on religion.

<Good and bad experiences at religious schools> Good: In a public school system in upper New York state I attended they set aside two hours a week for religious studies. They used that public school's bus system to send all the students to a neighboring church or other religious educational facility of their parents' choice. Even churches that had no classes started them to participate in that program.

Good : It was the best school in the town. Very good/funny teachers who used to make the class interesting. Father of the school was a great man who instilled great virtues in students. Bad (but still good foe me) : The school maintained a very strict discipline so it was fun to break the discipline and become famous among girls as the bad boy. I was often suspended for doing something naughty. The suspension didn't mean I had to stay at home. But suspension meant I had to sit in library instead of class. Once I spread rumour about myself that I beat the English teacher and slapped him when he came to punish me. I was also seen driving a car when I was far below the legal age to drive. Father announced it during morning assembly and I felt so glad to be famous among girls. I was also charged with taking a gang of 11 students to cinema theater after the school hours. Great memories.

Aj_Junelol I wish we went to school together 😂 did you ever have "drug free week" at your school? Idk why it just makes me laugh we got really into it and had prep rallies talking about how cool it was to not do drugs. They even had rappers and other cool kids representing what we were supposed to be like and make us want to be just like them 😂

It's my understanding that now the laws in Florida prohibit anything other than spanking on the butt with an open hand. I'm not even sure if schools do that anymore. But I've come to believe that striking a child for any reason is a bad idea. Aside from the potential physical harm, I think it could affect them in a negative way psychologically. But after reading the description of the way you and your friends behaved in class, I would probably make an exception and beat you all.
