I guess it depends on how wide your definition is of punk. I'm not sure of any order, but the things I listen to most in a punky kinda way are:
Alice Donut Atari Teenage Riot Dead Kennedys Melt Banana Leatherface Misfits
I don't listen to that much that's a pure 77 punk type thing, really.

Dead Boys - Live at CBGB's 1977Led by the one and only Stiv Bators. I chatted to a very wasted Stiv after a Lords Of The New Church gig after he quit on stage at the Marquee. Seemed a nice guy.

From that punk era.....the band that interested me most musically The STRANGLERS Hoary old pub rocking bandwagon jumpers with a Doors fixation are allowed?? . JJ is an arsehole, nearly kicked the crap out of my mate after sneaking into a soundcheck back in 77/78. Jet Black is 135 years old.

I love The Stranglers (seen them close to 20 times now I think) but I do have some annoyances with them. They are often found to be spouting how they were never a PUNK band, which is ironic since as you obviously know, they would still be playing in pubs as The Guildford Stranglers had they not adopted the PUNK sound! They even headlined at the PUNK Rebellion Festival recently FFS. Hypocrites much... JJ is probably the hardest man of that circuit though mate, he's now a full "dan" martial artist. Jet Black, yep, LOL! He has finally had to give up being air lifted onto the stage to drum for a couple of numbers.

The Jam and The Clash if taking it strictly as a preference, with The Ramones a very close runner up. What I always like to do when PUNK threads like this crop up on line is to trumpet ten damn great PUNK bands from the original British Wave.
The Adverts The Lurkers The Drones Chelsea Sham 69 The Vibrators 999 The Rezillos Angelic Upstarts The Boys
Latterly I fricking adore Rancid, closest thing to The Clash that their generation has had.

I like The Ramones best. I've tried everything from The Clash to The Dead Kennedys to Bad Brains or Green Day and I still like The Ramones the best. I personally think that punk and metal both got too regimented over the years like a bunch of metronomes that started to synchronize when you put them on the same table. Punk became screamy and political and put precepts before songwriting with a personal point of view and metal splintered into a lot of different subgenres that lacked the emotional resonance of early Black Sabbath. I respect that other people won't feel this way and there are still good songs being made but there's no albums I have found that I like listening all the way through like the first Ramones album. Interesting. Now I love The Ramones with my every breath, but they also veered off from what made them so great and speeded up, and it was piss poor. Great post though.

Stiff Little Fingers The Ruts The Slits The Sonics I'll stand by this statement, if Malcolm Owen hadn't prematurely died then The Ruts would have been as big as The Clash Babylon's Burning is easily in the top ten greatest PUNK songs of the original British wave. Staring At the Rude Boys wouldn't be too far behind either.

If The Cramps are considered punk they'd be near the top (though not sure I would call them that) As with The Misfits, it's opening a can of worms. The Cramps? they had a Psychobilly fan base, so go figure!

The reason I put on my post 'fave band from that punk era' was because of exactly that....their and others ambivalence toward the punk label. But as Spider Webb (drummer for Bad News) once retorted to singer Vim Fuego's comment that 'labels are unimportant'....." What if the label is EMI?" And JJB looked well'ard back in the day anyway, with his bassy jerks....if he's a Dan Man now....he can say what he likes about not being a punk. LoL

Damn, forgot The Ruts (with Malcolm) and "DC" who were such great live acts.

I was big into the punk scene in the mid-to-late 90s. I was listening to Bad Religion (my favourite), Lagwagon, Tilt, Hanson Brothers etc...
In fact, I saw the Hanson Brothers at one of the clubs where I used to frequent. Opening for them was a local band called Bassbag. They were not unlike Bad Religion. What made me more of a fan of theirs was that I went to high school with the drummer of the band.
My all time fave punk band is Bad Religion.

The Misfits I guess.
I prefer post-punk which is one of my top 3 favorite music genres.
Edit: I guess Wipers count so they’d be my pick.

The Sex Pistols
Small sample size but a better bunch of musicians (Sid excepted) than they are given credit
