So I'm watching The Shield for the first time through on Hulu. The series has been on my watchlist for years, but I'm just now getting to it. Honestly, I'm loving the show so far. The performances and storylines are great. Michael Chiklis as Vic Mackey definitely gives one of the best performances ever on TV. My maybe one slight complaint is when they start to focus a little too much on the cases of the week. The show is definitely serialized but then they sometimes veer off into these more filler storylines. The ongoing stories and character development is the best. At the sometime though they do a better job with the standalone cases than most other shows do.

This, along with Breaking Bad, are the only shows I know of that get better as they go on. Seasons 5-7 of The Shield is easily the best stretch of the show.

The show is full of powerhouse performances. Easily Michael Chiklis' best work.

It gets less serialized as it goes on. Unfortunately one episode is censored on Hulu. This is due to an accidental use of an edit of an episode previously used for European DVD release being used for the 4K remaster.
The same mistake is present on the Blu Ray set too.
That said, it's my favorite show of all time.

Imho it is a premium TV show on par with Breaking Bad. And it also has a very satisfying ending which leads to different paths in the most extreme way possible for each member of the Strike Team.

Breaking Bad and The Wire are in my top five TV shows of all time. So is The Shield. It is that good. It is also one of the rare shows that gets better every season. Seasons 5-7 are as good as anything ever put on television.

It's more episodic in the first season. I will amend my previous statement a bit. I definitely feel The Shield is better than Breaking Bad. The Wire is a different beast altogether, and it will come down to personal preference. Either way, they're both good shows.

So I finally finished watching The Shield... nearly 3 and a half years after I started it. If some are wondering why it took me so long, for one I'm a slow TV watcher. I don't really binge entire seasons or series all at once. On top of that it didn't feel like a series I should rush through. I feel like I enjoyed it and absorbed it all much more watching it slowly over time. Overall, I really loved the series. Acting, directing, writing, etc. were all top notch. Despite being nearly 20yrs old too I think it did a really good job reflecting modern issues America faces with policing.
