Auerbach, easily. He assembled those teams, kept them motivated, and played mind games with the rest of the league. (All those rumors about turning up the heat in the locker rooms, funny bounces on the parquet floor got into opponents heads and Red loved it. He probably started those rumors himself.) Phil had a knack for getting superstars to buy in to the team concept, I'm not saying he was a hack. But Jackson took over teams with superstars, Red built teams of superstars.

Jackson is overrated. 15 different coaches could have won with the talent he had. Howβd he do on the Knicks?

As a Player with them though, He won 2 NBA Championships.

I'll take Red. Pretty much agree with Reykahuka. In defense of Jackson, the oft trotted out argument that "Anyone could have won 11 championships with those teams," is a lazy and redundant one. It's the same argument you hear about F1 drivers winning World Championships. Bottom line is that if you're not one of the best 3 or 4 people in the world at your job you don't get the opportunity to start with, and you certainly don't end up with 11 championships if you're not every bit as good as those teams expected you to be.

Itβs not just that Phil had talent. He had who is widely considered to be the greatest player to ever play the game on one team and two of the greatest players on the other team. Any coach not winning rings with those Bulls and Lakers teams would be considered a failure. Yeah, he won 11 rings, I get it. But did Jackson make Jordan, Kobe, and Shaq or did Jordan, Kobe, and Shaq make Jackson? His rings to me are not too far off from the ring Switzer won in Dallas.

The difference to me is Dallas won two titles before Switzer showed up. Jordan, Kobe and Shaq hadn't won anything before Phil got there. I'm not arguing anyone could've stepped in and won a title in those circumstances anymore than I'm saying those players couldn't have won without Jackson. But there is a difference.
