My top 5:
Rio Bravo Red River The Cowboys The Longest Day True Grit or The Searchers
If you didn't like Fort Apache, don't watch She Wore a Yellow Ribbon. The 2 movies are similar, and I thought She Wore a Yellow Ribbon was actually the worse of the two.

I would like to affirm the quality of Wayne’s “Cavalry Trilogy” – not a true trilogy but western films about the 19th century U.S. Army shot mostly on location in Arizona and Utah. All three were directed by John Ford. These would be “Fort Apache” (1948), “She Wore A Yellow Ribbon” (1949), and “Rio Grande” (1950).
These I list are the ones I think The Duke gave his best performances – adding to the “Cavalry Trilogy” in which he shone.
Stagecoach (1939) Dark Command (1940) Back To Bataan (1945) Red River (1948) Sands Of Iwo Jima (1949) The Quiet Man (1952) Island In The Sky (1953) The Searchers (1956) The Wings Of Eagles (1957) The Alamo (1960) North To Alaska (1960) True Grit (1969) The Cowboys (1972) The Shootist (1976)
All in all, Wayne was pretty solid throughout the 1940s and 1950s.

I have seen very little of John Wayne but what I have seen it's definitely more negative than positive as, at least in the little I have seen, not one of them I like. but I will admit I got to see at least 2-3 more movies before I can start to form a more legit overall opinion of him.
