Even hardcore season ticket holders have stayed away for today's match v Arsenal, in protest at Mike Ashley. The usually wonderfully faithful Toon Army has members finally having enough, at the expense of missing the match live. More fool them or fair play to them? I'd say, they've paid, so attend. There's even a boycott boat sailing down the Tyne during the match.
In other news, people are complaining about the drop in standards at branches of House of Fraser, with some stores stocking scruffy piles of JD Sports merchandise, boxer shorts five for £9 etc, strewn across the shelves. Quite the bargain, I'd say, albeit I don't know the quality of JD Sports stuff as I've never shopped there.
Luiz and Pepe on bench, 0-0.

My Sky Sports week ran out 15 minutes into the match.
Not as many empty seats as I expected.

Joe Linton showed some nice skill there. Just looked at his stats for last season and cant believe the owner paid 40M for him.

Nothing to write home about here as Martin Atkinson blows up for the break. Newcastle showing a touch more tenacity than the visitors who could do with a little more fluidity amongst themselves.
Bruce will be the more satisfied of the two managers with Emry watching most of the half all hoodied up against the rain. A pretty poor half of football, remembered mostly for Almiron's dive (booked) and Shelvey assaulting the woodwork (with the ball)

Newcastle caught out as Maitland-Niles flew down the right flank drawing defenders towards him. He played a fine ball across to the area where Aberyango was waiting in loads of space to fire home on '58.

Pepe comes on for Arsenal with about 18 minutes to go. Let's have a look then.

The ref blows up for nothing-one.
Look out this season for Newcastle's new winger Saint-Maximin, the French 22 year old who came on and enjoyed a fine spell as sub. He seems to really enjoy the game too. His smile just coming on to the pitch was wider than Son Heung-Min's after potting a hat-trick.

It's funny because it's true.
