Lee Marvin manfully displays an M-3 "grease gun". Note the added machismo of taping two magazines together. Steve McQueen hefted one in Hell Is For Heroes. M-3s were cheapo Thompsons: stamped parts rather than machined ones. They were still used in APC's in Young Bravo's days of glory. ![](https://bamfstyle.files.wordpress.com/2015/06/ddreisf-gun-m3a.jpg)

About that gun: "The composite pistol used in the film - the actual prop used was destroyed after filming was completed in response to legal issues and in accordance with the Undetectable Firearms Act of 1988."
About other guns in IN THE LINE OF FIRE "Both Clint Eastwood and Dylan McDermott's characters use Sig Sauer 9mm pistols, the standard weapon in the U.S. Secret Service. However, in the opening scenes when they are undercover, Eastwood's character Frank Horrigan uses a Smith & Wesson .44 Magnum revolver - the gun he made famous in his role of Inspector Harry Callaghan in Dirty Harry (1971). It has been speculated that the film is an unofficial goodbye to Dirty Harry from Eastwood, much as Unforgiven (1992) was an unofficial goodbye to his unnamed character from his spaghetti westerns. "
